Interesting conversation with Tesla Tech today regarding Bullet Proof Glass option

Had my wife's Model 3 Windshield replaced in my driveway by Tesla. During the install I mentioned to the glass tech that I have a reservation for the CT.
He said he understands there will be an option for bulletproof glass. Now that is interesting!

Aren't there legal requirements and restrictions in place the moment you try to up-armor a vehicle? If Cybertruck were to be a good baseline for up-armoring, framed doors (as opposed to frameless) would have been better I think.

Cartels already have money to make expensive armor regular cars/trucks or buy expensive factory armored Audi, Mercedes, etc.

It is us, the potential victims of carjacking, kidnapping, stray bullets that need affordable protection that might be had from Cybertruck with factory OPTION for 9mm bullet-resistant glass windows at affordable price (much lower cost than third party because factory mass scale high volume.).

If Tesla really did not think it cost effective to have factory INSTALL OPTION then at least provide FACTORY accessory parts bullet-resistant window glass for install at Tesla Service Center or install by third party.

Tesla order from glass supplier to get economy of large scale so Tesla customers get much more affordable armor glass.

Cybertruck with Tesla factory bullet-resistant window glass would be only mass market armor vehicle for common family and only affordable option.

Not in the US. It’s just real expensive. Most vehicles require suspension and drivetrain changes to handle the added weight. Level IV armor weighs over 6lb/sqft. And then there is the glass….

Cybertruck hopefully will have one of the highest available payload (3.5K lbs) for it size of any EV 1/2 ton pickup truck and most large EVs. Hopefully we will know on Nov 30.

Cybertruck already has strong suspension & drivetrain and might not require additional changes to suspension & drivetrain.

Since Cybertruck already has more bullet resistance than most regular vehicles the Cybertruck should need less armour added than regular vehicles to get to a specific protection rating and Cybertruck has more available payload rating available before modification and so after mods will still have pretty good payload capability for real cargo (people & luggage).

The base model Cybertruck is so good is why IF we could get the bullet resistant glass mass produced then Cybertruck could be 1st affordable armored vehicle available to regular consumers.

There will not be economy of scale for factory bullet resistant glass because, even with enough volume to get economies of scale, there still wouldn't be enough people willing to pay the extra due to the disadvantages of weight and expense.

Not enough people get shot at while driving to make the disadvantages of armoring worth it to normal customers. There are already manufacturers who offer it, but it can't achieve enough economy of scale to reduce the price to anything most people would consider an affordable option.

Hopefully gun violence never becomes common enough that mass market family and business cars are armored as a matter or normal course. That would not be a good world to live in.
