Tesla Model 3 motors were around 97% efficient I believe, you can't get to 100%, so maybe the best improvement would be another 2%. A wider efficiency curve would also help but it's not likely to be more than single digit % improvement.

I wasn't saying the motor is 100% efficient, 100% of the reason for longer range is efficiency and aero.

It was Sandy Monroe who said the Lucid motor is more efficient than the M3. The Air gets 5 miles per kWh.

Yes the Lucid is very efficient, I'm just pointing out that only a very small portion of that can be attributed to the motors.

If battery size is the same, and CT battery of 123kwh gives 300mi range, then Lucid’a range (considering all other details the same) should be (0.33/0.24) * 300 =412.5 miles. Even with motors a smidgen more efficient one couldn’t get to 500mi. So something isn’t right or … we just don’t have all the details

You need to also adjust for the frontal crossectional area. A sedan with the same Cd as Cybertruck would get better range.

Tesla fanboy here. I see the new Lucid Gravity SUV has a 123 kw battery pack, same as the CT, but a claimed range of 450 miles. I figure that’s a legit number based on their sedan history. I’ve always been disappointed with the 310 mile range of the CT. Why would their range be so much better?

Lucid has an incredibly small, high-horse power yet efficient motor. Their tech should not be ignored.

Remember Sandy Munro tearing down first CT and finding half the battery pack missing, never got word if it was for battery expantion safety or room to beef up the pack at later date? IE: 500 said miles?

CT; 80 x 75 ( includes tires)
Lucid 78 x 65 (tires included?)

Drag factors:
CTf 80x75x0.33 =1,980
Luf 78x65x0.24 =1,217

drag ratio: 1217 / 1980 =0.615

lucid’s estmated range as compared to CT: 300/0.615 =487mi. So yah, in range of the adverticed 500mi. Clealy drag (and size) explains most of what makes the range difference.

Frontal crossection theoretically includes everything including exposed tire profile and side mirrors, but treating it as a rectangle is much easier for rough estimation!

Got it, I saw 500 somewhere - like said, I was lazy to find the real numbers, just wanted to show that drag is the villain of the story all other energy vampires are small by comparison (ie talk about their motors etc).

Tesla 's original Secret Master Plan called for development of relatively expensive, low-volume models (Roadster, S and X), and then using the profits to develop inexpensive, high volume-models (3 and Y).

Rivian and Lucid appear to be following the same general plan, but they are still in the expensive, low-volume stage (R1T and R1S for Rivian, Air and Gravity for Lucid), which puts them several years behind Tesla. Rivian is clearly trying to move to the inexpensive, high-volume stage, with the upcoming R2 (planned for First Half 2026) and R3/3X (no date).

Clearly the Gravity is expensive. Lucid has made claims that they will launch an inexpensive vehicle in 2026, but basically nothing has been revealed about it, except that Lucid has trademarked the name "Lucid Earth". So Lucid may be behind both Tesla and Rivian.

Incidentally, it's not clear how the Cybertruck fits into Tesla's Master Plans. As originally announced in 2019, Tesla planned to release expensive Cybertrucks priced like Models S or X, but also an inexpensive version priced like the Model 3. However, only the expensive versions of the Cybertruck have actually been released, at least as of early 2025.
