So I am doing a long road trip, Michigan to Florida.

There are times that it has me going just 40 miles and charging again and then 2 hours. How can I switch this to just drive the 2 hours and 40 minutes instad? Less stops if you will?
Or is it the battery only charges so fast when it is lower? Help me understand this and make it make sense

The battery changes faster at lower state of charge. 2:40 on the highway would require a high SOC which takes a long time to achieve at a Supercharger.
So two stops can be faster overall than one.

So trust the system lol.
If you are in high density corridor, you can charge for longer and it will adjust the next stop accordingly. Similarly, you can just not exit the highway and it will recalculate to the next charger (assuming there is one in range).

You can also select remove all charging stops, then add chargers back in as intermediate stops. That way it doesn’t precondition the battery too early and you can pick better options like 250kW chargers.

All depends on the route, hills along the way, etc...

If you leave on a trip with 200 miles until you THINK you need to stop and 'fuel up', but don't take into consideration that 4000 ft altitude increase, you may find yourself barely making it... And unless you then go DOWNHILL and can regen some, you may run out...

Trust the system and plan your stops for 'breaks' for lunch, dinner, bathroom breaks, etc... If you're stopping at, say, Chili's for lunch (like I do in Barstow on the way to Vegas), you're going to be there for at least 30 minutes for lunch so that's the perfect time to charge up too! Or vice versa...

I try to gauge my trip so I arrive at the Nevada border with as little charge as possible... Why? Because once I cross the border, the PRICE IS CUT IN HALF!! Yep!! Calif. is about 50 cents compared to about 26 cents (last February)...

The nav is sometimes a little off, it has varied over releases. In general, I trust that it will get me there, but I don't trust that it is optimal for me.

If you don't like the Supercharger that it picks, just pick another one. I do it all the time.
I often select other Superchargers because of the amenities.

It's hard for newbies to understand, but charging to 80% is far from the optimal solution. In reality, 5-50% will get you from point A to B a lot faster. That's around 2 hours driving.

The nav system uses a number of things to determine what Supercharger to stop at. And very probability the chargers that it picks today will be different than the ones it picks on the road. The efficiency of the truck depends on things like wind, temperature, and your driving habits. And those alone effect how often the truck needs to stop. But the algorithm also takes into consideration how busy the Supercharger is, the speed capabilities and how many cars are currently enroute to the Supercharger.

Coming from Michigan down to Florida is no big deal. The first stretch doesn't have the Supercharger density that the last part does. From Atlanta to Orlando it's Superchargers at least every 50 miles.

Not always, but to be fair you can trust it 98% of the time.

When you run into wacky routing, you can just look at the map (or Google maps), and pick one that makes the most sense. Route directly to that Supercharger (so that it gives you realtime telemetry, and to make sure you can make it). After you arrive, you can set your full destination again and it should be fine from there.

I have had a few times where I asked the route planner wtf it was smoking, and just overrode it.

pro tip: if you can scout the route ahead of time, you can pick better places to stop for lunch. especially if you have a passenger with you who can do it in realtime.

That's weird, 50¢ is like PG&E peak rate.

It's 55cents here with SCE... 58 in summer... But remember, charging companies (like Tesla) cut deals with the utilities AND a lot of the new locations have mega solar as well...

Price of 'E' isn't likely to go down (especially in CA) either, I think it's due to go UP again later this year and they will probably want a HUGE raise in price to cover upgrading to 'fire proof' and/or bury lines, and after the fires, they will likely get it too... Glad I have solar... I don't have to worry, in fact the more the price goes up, the shorter my ROI is going to be...

Yeah.

Location also determines price - it may be that specific Supercharger sites are on segments that have capped out on power demand or flexibility to purchase cheaper power, too. They have to compete with anything else on that leg.

That's one reason why siting high power charging stations is so slow.
