Last time I hit the Supercharger...
Gives me an idea for a suggestion for Tesla. If they can send you a message saying the car is going to finish charging in 10 min they can send you a message saying the station is now half full.

No idle fees are charged until the new limit is reached but at some chargers the new limit can't be set beyond 80%.
Can you explain how this works? I havenā€™t been to a supercharger before. Some superchargers wonā€™t let you charge past 80% ?

Completely agree.

I would most definitely like to know when the last stall is filled. At that point you know someone likely to be waiting for you if you donā€™t move your car soon.

I can see an opportunity for vending machines at Supercharger locations with adapters for various types of EVs-perhaps with some free charging minutes factored into the price. Providing free non-Tesla adapters at the Superchargers will be a non-starter because of thefts by the curious miscreant just walking by.

This is silly. They had two plugs on their EU chargers for awhile. This isn't a problem. To steal it, you'd have to destroy it.

Yes, but until all EV makers standardize on two plug designs, there will be a variety of adapters needed for different brands. No way to attach three or more plugs to one charging cable. Let those non-Tesla folks bring their own adapters or purchase them on site.

There's only three now, and the third one is already deprecated in new cars.

Based on the current draft of the legislation, it just sounds like they need to support multiple vendors. Doesn't say they have to support all standard adaptors.

Supporting Tesla & CCS should be enough.

Even Electrify America is dropping CHaedM0 (however that's spelled).

In North America it's Tesla and CCS right now with a handful of CHAdeMO relicts. If they do here what they have done in Europe (Tesla and CCS) then CHAdeMO drivers will have to obtain an adapter. There is a CHAdeMO to Tesla adapter. It shouldn't be too much of a challenge to build a Tesla to CHAdeMO.

What makes most sense to me is a fee based on a combination of electricity consumed and time consumed (which punishes slower charging vehicles, but hey, they're tying up a stall), with the time part being higher past some percentage of charge when more than 2/3 of the stalls are in use (or always for a single charger) - and that you're notified a few minutes before the higher rate kicks in. But stopping charging and then billing idle time is silly; if the charger is tied up anyway, and the vehicle can take more, might as well let it - if you're going to pay a penalty rate, might as well get something during that time. Yes, that will be a bit less incentive to make room for the next person, but if the shortage of chargers is that great, it's time to build more anyway.

Longer range vehicles, even if they charge as fast as possible, will take longer; but they'll do so less often, so that evens out, provided the locations are sized more or less equally well relative to demand.
