Hmmm… how does the bumper camera work with obstructions. I guess if FSD will not be used as a police cruiser no need.
Looks like camera was moved to front of winch.

Very Kewl! I love to get a bumper like that for my CT with a winch pocket and mount points for more lighting, etc.

I wonder how they powered the winch…or if it’s display only.

The 48v power tap in the frunk is only 400w, not nearly enough for a winch.

Put a separate battery just for the winch in the frunk. Use frunk 48V to charge battery.

It is fairly common for ICE pickups to use separate battery especial if motor is diesel instead of gas.

Pickup trucks with snowplows also frequently have dual battery setups.

Ford, RAM, GM pickup trucks & commercial vans have dual batteries as standard on some models and as factory option available for other models.

Question: is it a good idea to have a separate battery in truck bed just for a winch?

asked by: Lamarr S

Expert Reply:

If you are a frequent user of a medium to heavy duty winch then yes it is a good idea to carry a separate battery with you. Many times we see the auxiliary battery mounted within the engine compartment if there is space available when you have the winch on the front of your vehicle. If you are planning on using your winch when mounted to your trailer then we often see it mounted to the frame of the trailer, but you could also mount a battery box and battery to the bed of your truck. I have linked a Help Article for you to better see some layouts people commonly take.

If you have a light duty winch, we often see customers just using the battery already in their vehicle to power the winch.

Not sure how the new system is setup but if it’s like the 150s, you don’t need the truck running to use it. That system runs off a separate battery and the truck will start (generator) and recharge the battery if needed. Fuel use at idle is not much but if you have diesel, you need to idle them a bit higher.

Batteries provide instant amperage for heavy loads. I've seen many a heavy duty alternator burned out from people loading down their electrical system with accessories and not having enough battery to run it all. This is the same reason BIG audio systems use 1+ farad capacitors, even the BIG alternators can't keep up with the demand for instant power. This is not to say everyone who runs accessories on a single battery will have problems but it's the ideal way to go. If you do go to a second battery get yourself a charging isolator and run your accessories off a separate battery than the rest of the truck. This will prevent you from getting stranded if you ever run 1 battery dead for any reason. I have a 200 amp alternator and still run dual Optimas because I have a lot of electric junk to feed.

I'm not sure where you live/drive, never heard of Canyon Lake, but if you even have an idea to use a snow plow... get the dual batteries. They help with winching too. I plow, so it was a no brainer for me. Good luck with either route you choose.

You never ever run anything like a plow or winch off of your starting batteries. always run separate battery or batteries. Always have them isolated so the truck will start and get you home, you don't want to kill the starting batteries and/or the alternator by any mistake or any possible chance. I've seen it happen more than once and for the extra insurance that you get and since you get the battery cheap and free shipping there's no way i'd run it off the truck. Good luck.
A gas motor is alot easier to start than a diesel is. i'm not saying you can't do it, i'm just saying i wouldn't and since you have way more experience than i do i will defer to you sir. But since he has the battery and the know-how, why not run the extra battery instead of chancing it? Dead starting batteries on a diesel means harder to start than a gas motor and i'm not being mean nor a smart alec. I'd like to see your light bar installed at night with the lights on.

Use a 12 volt battery of the same basic capacity as what your truck requires, but then run a good, heavy duty, minimum 10 gauge wire from the accessorie terminal on the trailer wiring plug, through the wiring harness, and connect it to the + post of the winch battery. Leave your truck running while you are using the winch, and you will have the benefit of 2 batteries powering the winch. Also, the winch battery will get recharged while driving down the road.

I use a marine type battery called "Dual Purpose" I got at Autozone, 1000 cranking amps. Like was mentioned here, it is charged by the 12V hot terminal on the trailer plug. The winch is a 10,000 lb Superwinch.

on my toy hauler, I have a winch on the gooseneck, and I carry a spare battery for it or jumps for the treasures I go find. I buy a battery that will fit in my truck as well, in case I need help. I usually use a dual terminal battery as well so it has many uses.. it costs a lil more but is handy always having an extra battery on hand when dragging home rusty iron.
ps.. you can rig it to charge off the power option on the 7 pin.. kinda like the trailer battery for breakaway..

The fact that this truck does not have a factory winch plug-in area in the bumper area tells you that this is just a luxury toy.

Nearly all trucks in production do not have a pre-installed plug for a winch.

Even so, there's no standard as winches come in a vast array of sizes and power sources; from ones mounted on bikes to ones on heavy machinery.

The T Sportline CTX Extreme Duty Front Bumper with Integrated Winch accessory uses the second battery method as means to power the winch.
The second battery is mounted in frunk and they have option for AGM battery or Li-ion based battery.

You might try asking your question on their thread.
