There will always be some of that, but I think there's some genuine concern there. Hard angles, unforgiving thick hard to bend metal, hard sharp perpendicular edges, seem more dangerous. And again, one would hope police and emergency vehicles are driven by folks a little more skilled or paying a little more attention and or a little less likely to be under the influence of alcohol, etc. Maybe all that doesn't add up too much, but it is not nothing.
Do you really think, for even a moment, that in a vehicle v pedestrian collision, the front end of ANY car or truck has enough give and bend to it to appreciably soften the impact???

Why wouldn't I? That's why there was a concern with those really tall bar type bumpers, the bars were pushing into people with greater force instead of somebody hitting the more forgiving plastics and hood, contacting with much more surface area.

As I stated in other posts. It sounds reasonable that, different vehicles of differing total weights, different shapes and different materials are going to react differently when hitting a pedestrian, speed and angle and other things being equal.

If something's going to hit your hand, would you rather it be a hatchet, crowbar or a tennis racket at the same speed and angle. I'd go with a tennis racket every time and for sure never the hatchet. Maybe there's less of an argument if it's the difference between a sledgehammer and a hammer, but I'd still go with the hammer. It may be closer then I would think with the hammer having less surface area.

I don't care who made the vehicle. I have issues with Tesla and some of their decisions just like any other manufacturer. Just seeing it's shape and then hearing how it's constructed and what it's made out of and seen parts of crash test videos, I have honest concerns.

What I'm speaking of is how the movement has morphed to the extreme, where people can't even say what they mean without being cancelled or legislated away.
This is way off topic, man.

People being cancelled for being jerks or bigots is other people using their first amendment right to not associate with jerks or bigots.

I mean I do agree. I would much rather be hit by a model 3 than a cybertruck.

I think the biggest difference will be low speed impacts where someone might have a minor injury that they can walk away from and do minor damage to the hood. The Cybertruck in this situation might leave someone with fracture or even a bad wound if you hit the edge.

But I honestly do not have concerns. I would be more worried about some old truck with a pillow on the hood than I would be about the Cybertruck. The Cybertruck can do more damage but it also is loaded with safety features. Actually I worry about Tesla less than I do than any other vehicle at all. Tesla might get the most news coverage when things go wrong, but it actively avoids hitting things.

Exactly. When they talk about the sharp edges of the Cybertruck, they seem to forget about all the sharp edges on everything else!

Yeah, I do hope that the autonomous driving gets to a point where we see a huge dip in accidents in general, pedestrian or otherwise with fewer fatalities, if the car can actively avoid them. I don't think it's there yet. But I totally think it's doable. But again, all things being equal, like you, I'd rather get hit by the Model 3 In some unavoidable scenario where it happens. It's your or someone else's life, why not take any reasonable advantage you can?

Honestly yes and no. Anecdotal we do see a difference in trauma we see at the hospital in relationship to what vehicle has caused said trauma.

That being said, you’re likely going to get fucked up if you get hit by a vehicle.. FWIW, less from some and more from others from what I’ve seen…

*Edited for clarity since I’m not smrt…. Haha

autonomous driving will not solve anything for pedestrian safety! if goverment decides to use autonomous driving as solution for pedestrian safety you will never get anywhere.
It would be interesting to see data behind numbers. In my experience US were never built with pedestrians in mind, it is pretty common to drive in neighborhoods built before 2000 with no sidewalks and it is still pretty rare to see any pedestrians with high risk of being impacted by car in suburbs. I suppose most impact happens in urban areas where pedestrians are more common and they feel entitled to cross the street without any regards to traffic. I was amazed how people cross streets in New York without looking left/right first.. they dont feel responsibility for their own life, they believe it is a 60K pounds garbage truck driver responsibility to ensure they are safe when crossing street on red light!

Depends on the pedestrian.

The premise of this thread is completely flawed, and is just another case of fanboism preaching to the choir it seems.

Avoidance does near nothing if the vehicle has no time to respond.

A pedestrian falling off the curb and hitting a vehicle driving by has no meaningful time to react. Unless it had sideways thrusters or something ridiculous.

Besides as we know, Teslas brakes on the CT are currently sub par so even having avoidance wouldn’t help in most pedestrian situations.

In the Lambo SUV vs CT brake test, the Lambo is COMPLETELY STOPPED, whilst the CT does this below, because it is still travelling at 35MPH:

Tesla Cybertruck Pedestrian Safety Hypocrisy 1703809983220

Given that it is unreasonable to think every pedestrian incident can be "avoided" every care should be taken by the manufacturer, especially of one purporting to be a safety conscious one, for persons both inside and outside of the vehicle to compensate for a potential impact.

This applies to people, including customers as well of said vehicle, simply falling onto the CT body panels whilst the vehicle is parked and completely stationary. Or should the vehicle start up and quickly drive out if the way before you fall?

As we all know (or should at least) if you reduce the surface area of contact the force increases. So rounded deforming shapes are much less damaging than those sharp rigid panels on the CT.

As for pedestrian protection by having appropriate bodywork, there is hundreds of pages of EU legislation covering this, and 100% yes, size, shape and materials matter heaps to reduce impact energy.

These are not things that have been concocted to defame Cybertrucks.

That is a completely absurd and ridiculous notion, that could only be created by the lunacy of one forum jester called @HaulingAss

Yes I am calling it out because it is plain ridiculous.

If any should have the ability to use google you will see a plethora of pedestrian safety devices described online. Some have springs, others shear pins, along with deforming panels that are designed specifically to reduce injury, in particular head injuries. Thick Stainless doesn't deform as well, is heavier so also carries inertia better etc. all of which lead to higher impact energies and injuries.

I see the Cybertruck being forced to make a pedestrian airbags in the near future, or if they hope to sell it in the EU, possibly even Australia/NZ.

Besides production timeline, that is my #1 concern for getting one here.

Pedestrian airbags on vehicles are a requirement in EU/AUS/NZ ?

Not yet. But pedestrian safety regulations apply that make the CT questionable atm.

Only way around it would be to get it registered at over 3500kg.
