You absolutely need to report that first incident. That is dangerous to everyone on the road and completely unacceptable. If he keeps getting away with that type of behavior, he's going to keep doing it and hurt somebody some day. I bet a visit from the local police would make him think twice before doing something like that again. It's sad that this has become accepted behavior in America.
I live in Colorado. Boulder and Denver are very liberal areas and I drive through both of them, but I haven't seen this type of behavior here. I've been flipped off and get the occasional thumbs down (usually from a Subaru), but nothing violent. For the most part, nobody seems to care anymore. The truck still gets some looks, but it's mostly accepted here now, at least in my experience. Nobody ever gives my M3 a second look. If I lived in an area where I either needed to conform to somebody else's thoughts and beliefs or live in fear for the safety of my family, I would use every legal means necessary to fight back. If that failed, I would find a new place to live. I would not want to live in a place like that.
