Recurring "CRITICAL SAFETY!!!" issue with rear wheel alignment. Side note: WTF is up with the cupholders??

Hi all,

I've had my truck for 6 weeks. Over the last two weeks there have been 4 instances where the screen starts flashing red and posting a "CRITICAL SAFETY ISSUE: PULL OVER" warning, along with a beeping sound. It becomes much more difficult to steer in these instances.

I pull over, and put it in park, and it shows a rear wheel alignment symbol (the symbol shows the back wheels at a slant). I get out, shut the doors, check the rear wheels. When I get back in, the warning is cleared, and I'm good to go.

In each of these instances, this issue occurs pretty close to my departure point. One happened as I was backing out of my driveway. Two occurred at the same point, about a mile from my house, where I pulled up to a stop sign and started making a right turn. The fourth one occurred when I was leaving a campsite--I was going a normal speed, but realized that I was about to miss my turn, so I hit the brakes somewhat hard, and started to turn left (in this instance, for the one and only time, I received a "CALL ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE? MANUALLY OVERRIDE?" message, that also said I could "try getting out of the vehicle, closing all doors, and getting back in," which coincidentally had already been my approach).


Has anyone else dealt with this? I initially thought/hoped that it was just a one-off situation, but that doesn't appear to be the case, at this point.


Side note: WTF is up with the cupholder liner? Mine just collapses in whenever I put something in there.

That's not a thing. My cupholders have spring-loaded sides, but I assume that's not what you mean by "collapse"

On the cupholders, yours sound awesome. Mine just has a silicone liner, with little tabs that ostensibly hold it in place...but they don't. I'll send a pic.

I will initiate service on the other issue--I asked if anyone else had dealt with this.

I have the same issue that has been becoming more frequent in the last 2 months.

However,my critical alert is related to the low voltage when using the outlets in the cabin or bed. Seems like an issue with the PCM (Power Conversion Module) that converts DC to AC and when that module is faulty, it seems the rear steering actuators are also connected some how, causing the Critical errors.

In my particular case, I tested it without using any AC outlet for a week, no errors whatsoever so ever.

The day I am driving it in for service I try to plug something into the AC outlet. It eventually gives me a critical alert, pull over immediately. I have also tried it with multiple devices such as a compressor fridge, Ecoflow Delta, Ecoflow Wave, all with the same result.

Thanks for your response! I may see what warning, exactly, was given, on mine, but I think it was the "rear axle steering disabled," as yours was. Are you taking yours in, then?

Ah, man. Now I see what you mean. I think it is an easy fix with a plastic pry tool maybe- but even easier the next time you go in for tire rotation, take it to SC maybe. But in all honesty, when the cup holder works as designed, it death traps your drinks in them to the point that I flip my Dunkin' lids and feel like I'm going to dig through the sides of styrofoam cups.

Yeah, that's not correct. The rubber insert is supposed to be secured around the perimeter.

The cupholder just 'clips' in with little rubber tabs along the top, but they pull away easily if you put something larger than a regular soda can or water bottle in there. Yours looks the same as our @HeWasaLonelyGhost , or at least, the same when my wife's driven it, and before I patiently tuck all the tabs back in. Tesla is pretty good at a lot of things, but cupholders, rain sensing and phone charging are not a strength.

Just received a message in the app that the repair was completed. The PCS was replaced by the service center which say resolved the issue. I haven’t picked up the vehicle yet to verify.

? Okay, I think that's all accurate. I do put the little tabs back in, and I've also tried just taking the whole liner out (works well enough...but is too large of an opening, and everything slides/wobbles around), but within a day or two, they're back out. I'm looking at aftermarket inserts, but it's hard to tell what would be an improvement.

The rain sensing comment is funny--takes a lot of rain to get it going...but then it doesn't really want to stop. Alternatively, it will trigger a sweep on a completely dry day, or coming into my garage! I do think that the wiper is not great, overall. It's so simple, but regular wipers, starting from a bottom position, and pausing in the bottom position, allow water to accumulate above the blades, and then they push the rain up and off of the windshield. Starting in the up position, the CT wiper kind of pushes the rain down...but not off. So then the rain runs back up the windshield...and gets pushed down again. Seems like a form over function kind of thing.

I'm making a lot of complaints here about things that are really not a big deal. The speed, space, quietude, range on a charge, user interface, etc.--have all been outstanding. I love the truck.
