Is Uniden currently considered the best option? Back in the day I installed an Escort 9500ci + laser jammers in my first Model S but since then have lived without a detector and generally relied on Waze. There's a decent amount of LIDAR in use around me, although not really looking to install jammers, so my understanding is there's not much you can do if you get buzzed with laser.

This was a summary I got from my AI assistant for the top 3 detectors (According to the internet):

Your AI assistant is wrong. It has directional alerts.

Your assistant needed to go no further than Vortex… THE authority on this.

Uniden R8 is the guy’s daily use detector. His exact words:

“The Uniden R8 is an impressive new radar detector. It’s been my daily driver since November and I’ve been enjoying it so much that even after finishing beta testing and creating this Uniden R8 review, I continue choosing the R8 as my go-to radar detector of choice.”

I won’t disagree. I have a R7 which is 98% of a R8. Its range is amazing and have had no tickets since I got it. When I see a R8 on sale, I will get it so I have 2 of them (1 for the Ford and 1 for the CT).

You can’t go wrong with an Escort Redline 360c, but IMHO, the Uniden is the best I have ever owned.

I know. I get it. Thank you for your service.

That said... now that you are retired... get your radar detector (y) Seriously... when you are on a straightaway in the middle of nowhere... its nice to step it up a bit.

I get it too... I was a Firefighter for 16 years. I responded to cores, and more accidents than you know. But OTOH, I know I am a "safe" speeder. There is a time and place to step it up.
I spent a lot of time at the fire stations! 2 times a week minimum that’s where I ate my dinner. Played basketball in the bays. Racket all at the main station.
Thanks for your service brother.
I get my speed time in my Cadillac CTS-V full race car in track days.
I still teach EVOC to a couple departments.
Retired Chief Driving instructor ( track boss ) at the Oregon Police Academy. Raced low level NASCAR. Autocross. Dirt tracks. Etc.

And you’d appreciate my fire engine imported from Japan.

Thanks, good info. Do they tend to go on sale much? Everything I'm seeing is $699 for the R8. I can wait, but not for that long. lol.

Yeah they do. I saw one for $559 last month. Prime day is coming up… you may find a deal then. Just keep an eye open for them. The next time I see it, I will probably get it myself.

I own a cybertruck, delivered in April.
I’m retired police, so I can say if you get pulled over for any traffic violation, odds of a warning are slim when your radar detector is in plain sight. That’s a pretty common practice.
One of the only good things about Illinois is that these radars aren’t illegal, so I’m def getting this done.

I've seen these threads. I like the 3D printed arms, bit you need filament that is heat resistant. This is an option for the existing mirror arm.
The cheapest & easiest plastic used for 3D printing is PLA, which shouldn't have any issues below 150F; with cabin overhead protection, you should be well within that.
The second best option is PETG, which is good for 185F
ABS is common and suitable for 212F
Most car interior plastic is PP, which is printable and suitable for 158F.
Thus, there are many great plastic options for 3D printing.

I've tried PLA and PETG both warped in the heat.

There's no problem with ASA-CF filament works great for the uniden mount

Not sure I would like the detector hanging down that low. A cop may say that it is obstructing your view out the windshield. I installed mine up by the visor. Doesn't interfere with the visor folding down, and is up higher than what the rear view mirror was.
No need for such a hang low. I just use the stadard suction cup mount on the plastic and it holds as well as on glass.
