Did you ever do a one time surface scour clean on these inside sections of the door? Could be superficial manufacturing contaminants rusting rather than the underlying structural steel if not. May be worth scrubbing off the rust layer throroughly and then seeing if it comes back after that is done.

Hopefully some that are better at materials science than I am will chime in here.

Wonder how long it will be before these photos are all over my apple news feed, lol.

Thanks for pointing this out with these photos. I would think it is most likely moisture trapped between the seal and the metal although I suppose it could be some component of the seal itself involved or some reaction with a cleaning product similarly trapped as well.

Cheers

It looks like your door is scratching the bottom? Magnetic stainless steel can rust so it is concerning to me if this type of thing will happen on the CT. Probably want to use somthing to get it off so it doesn’t start to get worse. I would get it off then maybe spray a little clear coat over it and make sure my door was set correctly.

I’ve read up a bit on 301 cold rolled stainless steel which from what I’ve read is what the CT stainless is made of. It’s a bit conflicting because is one line it does say stainless is “rust proof” however in another line it says it’s “rust resistant” and NOT Completely rust proof. I copy this so no one has to click a link. I might be missing something so don’t jump down my throat if you have better information ? It seems colder climate CT might get struck by this.

Yes, 301 cold rolled stainless steel is considered rust-proof, meaning it has good resistance to corrosion, but its corrosion resistance is not as high as some other stainless steel grades like 304, and its performance can be affected by exposure to harsh environments or high temperatures; it is best suited for mildly corrosive conditions at ambient temperatures.

Key points about 301 stainless steel:
  • Corrosion resistance:
While not completely immune to rust, 301 stainless steel offers good resistance to corrosion due to its chromium content, making it suitable for many applications where rust protection is needed.

And that's why it's called stainLESS steel and not stainPROOF steel...

I have tossed out old stainless steel silverware that, after about a decade started to tarnish up pretty good...

I can't really tell what i am looking at.

Also, 6 month old account, this is the first post, and not asking if any others have seen this type of deposits?

Looks like the area between the door card and door.
thanks now I see it, that pic was playin tricks on my eyes! Still curious if it’s really rusting or just contaminates (like brake dust) sticking there and rusting. OP try some BKF and show us the after pic, and whether there’s any pitting or not.

Welcome to the OP on their first post!

Not quite sure what we're looking at here, but in the second shot it looks like you've got some rubbing and your paint is wearing in spots. Yeah, the CT obviously doesn't have paint so signs point towards this being from another vehicle.

Maybe try another first trolling post?

Looks like the rubber gaskets are contaminated (eg dirty and water) and frequent opening/closing and vibrations is causing the abrasions seen on the door itself. Regular cleaning of that area, along w/ some kind of gasket protectant (eg Nextzett Gummi Pflege) would help.

sus posts like this should be automatically flagged as potential FUD.

looks like surface staining from the roller/press forming machine to me ?‍♂
