Oh jeez, Porche is really falling off the wagon lately like a drunk uncle on the holidays. Sucks cause I really loved the Taycan. At least no one can claim Tesla or Bolts have the most EV fires anymore.

From what I understand, the Taycan battery was a bit of a shit show. Worst warrantee in the industry and had a laundry list of things they didn’t want you doing with the battery.

No worries though, VW is spinning Porsche off in a mini IPO thing to earn some cash to finance EV transition.

I think GM is selling off the Geo brand name for similar reason ?

I believe Porsche (really everyone except Tesla) uses prismatic cells rather than cylindrical cans. They have higher energy density, but are less resistant to thermal runaway.

Rivian uses 2170 cells.

Chinese makers use LFP blade cells in their small cars (as does Tesla in SR).

But yeah… most USA shipping cars are prismatic/ pouch style. Though I’m not sold on energy density since most non Teslas are significantly heavier than Teslas ?

Why in a nutshell the structural pack is so important. Tesla has a big weight advantage without it, that only gets bigger with structural packs.

Honestly, Taycan just had my favorite styling of any available EV sedan so far; I'm just a sucker for abnormal headlights I guess. I mean, I'm obvi firmly in the Tesla camp, but competition just makes more interesting cars function wise in my mind, and I'd rather mix and match if I could ever afford a second car. Those fold flat ionic 5 seats got me lookin like ? tho, I wonder if I could diy them onto the CT's seat stands and swap the electronics (assumption based on mY).

That Ionic 5 does look pretty competitive with the model Y, I wonder what issues will crop up.

Definitely. The Taycan is a great car only really let down by its traction battery and cheap AC charger. Porsche did some cool things to keep regen consistent and available same as their power. And their DC charging is the right way to go about it, ahead of Tesla there a little.

But the heart of an EV is its battery, which is why Tesla focuses on it so.

If you are still following this, the ship sank. We will likely never find the cause. In regard to some of the comments, these ships do have sprinkler systems installed. I've tested them on ships similar to this and they absolutely drench you. During testing we wear hard hats and rain gear and then walk the spaces to make sure all of the sprinkler heads are functional. Not sure why the onboard firefighting equipment (sprinklers, CO2, portable and crew resonse) failed. Also not sure exactly why it sank, it is likely that in heavy seas without steering the cargo shifted and in addition to extra water from fire fighting created "free surface effect". It is also possible that the heat of the fire caused failure in a watertight opening.
