sorry, making a distinction here:

let’s just assume that everyone will all the time have the (center) rearview mirror on the main screen. There’s just zero vis our back with tonneau closed, and NEAR zero with tonneau open.


what we’re talking about separately is the prospect of ALSO having active, every time you drive, the tow ADDITIONAL screens for each side-mirror camera.


based on your descriptions, I think I now understand the suspicion I had before:

remove your physical side mirrors, and you’re committed to having your center screen display all three cameras at once


And what remains to be understood is:

(A) how much screen real estate does that take up? Snd

(B) will this view be the default view every time you get in the truck, or will ‘that button’ need to be selected every time you get in the truck




And meanwhile, FYI, to one of your prior points: the historical inclination to ‘look over your shoulder’ before switching lanes will in the CT fade

between there is very little rearward visibility ‘over the shoulder’ in a CT, owing to the layout of the rear passenger windows (high and narrowing to the rear) and the sail pillars (highest exactly where the blind spot is), even if the tonneau is open.


I’m sure Tesla has addressed this (at least materially) in the cameras and software, but here talking about the camera/software effects and UI once the side mirrors are removed.

because maybe it’s just me, but I’ve never found my side mirrors unhelpful or useless ?

I wonder how this will change once the car starts driving itself off the lot. If the bulk of the car cost is software and the car is going from the lot to being in service as a robotaxi, will the same “well known” “facts” still hold true?

This honestly looks really easy to have an aftermarket cap. Could even use a very similar insert that the mirror has.

Even if it isn't completely flush like they are saying in the video, I would be fine with that. I'm not really worried about what something looks like when you stare directly at it. It's still going to look awesome without the mirrors and a tiny little bump where they used to be would be a small price to pay. As long as it's a stainless steel cap, I'm happy.

Yeah, there should be a pretty easy ability to have either an injection molded or 3d printed low profile plug that snaps in from the top or.... for a more seamless and likely more robust plug, using something similar to the 3 bolt mirror base but with a flat piece of stainless that sits flush with the hole instead of the mirror perched on top.
