Why not wire into the oem reverse lights? Are OEM reverse 12v or 48v? IF it were me assuming they are 48v, run 48v light in conjunction with that.

  1. The taillights (and I assume reverse lights) are 48v, not so easy to procure.
  2. There is a warning in the owners manual about tapping the 48v system (quoted below).
  3. Could run 12V using a buck converter, but see point #2.
  4. I wanted to maintain the stock wiring. I just added a plug-in pig tail between the trailer harness and the trailer plug-in.
  5. The truck is expecting to see a trailer with back-up lights, so this approach reduces risk to the low voltage system.

"Warning
The two power feeds are the only points at which you can connect accessories directly to the low voltage system. Do not use any other low voltage wiring in Cybertruck to power accessories. Doing so can lead to unpredictable or unexpected results (such as a total loss of power steering) and can affect the performance of Cybertruck and the safety of its occupants. Any damage caused by using or installing non-approved parts, or by performing non-approved modifications, is not covered by the warranty. Tapping into the power feeds should only be done by knowledgeable and experienced individuals. Tesla does not accept liability for death, personal injury or damage that occurs if you install accessories using non-approved methods or circuits."

Thanks for sharing this info about tapping into the OEM 48v. I will avoid this as well.

i got a y-splitter for the trailer harness because i did want to mess with the factory wiring, but when i did this the truck thinks it has a trailer connect to it. When you tapped into the OEM trailer harness for the light and not have anything plugged into the harness does the truck sense its towing still?

No, mine does not detect a trailer after I used the pigtail plug-in and the LED backup light.

I found out recently that even if you have a trailer connected, you can go into trailer profiles and toggle the trailer profile button so it does not use the trailer profile. Then FSD works. Use with care.
