If I'm not imagining it, my tailgate used to mechanically move towards the bed when I pushed it closed until it clicked. It doesn't do that anymore.

Try barely closing the tailgate as gingerly as possible till it makes the lightest of contact and see if it pulls it in.

That's what used to work and now doesn't

Then it’s time to open the app and schedule service. But, to avoid embarrassment, I would recommend that you double check that you’re not pushing it past the grab point which is very, very, very easy to do. Especially once you get muscle memory about what the weight is.

I am unaware of any cases over the time that the truck has been out and somebody has reported this issue, where it hasn’t been a miscalculation of how easy it is to close it past the grab point.

It’s really abnormal the way they have it weighted. So, don’t be too proud to admit that you’re just a brute who doesn’t know his own strength! ?

I have helped more than a few people on the forum realize that they were doing it too hard (giggity) and even I from time to time will think (for at least a moment) that mine’s broken before I double check and see that— nope I just pushed it too hard again.

Tesla should really recalibrate the way this works in my opinion.

Weird, it's the same motor for cinch and release and each side has four position switches.
Is the tailgate sticking out? If so, could try dual scroll wheel reset and power off.

I just carefully reread what you wrote here. I can tell you that no it does not do that. And that’s what makes it weird.

If you push it past the point where it grabs it out of your hand and closes it; there is no sensation that you get once you go past that point. It’s as if you closed it by yourself (which for all intents and purposes you did); which is confusing and in a way disorienting.

Close it as slowly and gently as you can and when you get to the catch point it will then grab it and close it, but if you push past that point you’ll feel nothing and hear nothing, except for the click from when you manually closed it.

It messes with your head.

If I go super slowly it does grab and pull. I swear it wasn't as sensitive before, and pulled the tailgate farther in than it does now but I'm going to ignore that. Thanks for the help.

Yep! Happy to help. It’s just weird. ??‍♂

You said if you close it more slowly it works for you and I think that momentum is the issue.

In a way, it’s more convenient to just do it yourself than to try to get the “right feel” for exactly where you need to be to have it work. Because, once you’ve lifted it from horizontal to whatever angle it needs to be at to grab it you’ve already done 99% of the work anyway. AND, if you’ve done it quickly the momentum is going to carry you through past the grab point.

Wait wait, my tailgate has never done this. Is this a feature that was released on the foundation series trucks?

Mine's not foundation. Try pushing up the tailgate SUPER slowly until it just catches.
