Part 1: Tesla 4680 Teardown // Cell Disassembly // 4 hours in 1 hour
Part 1 of the Tesla 4680 Teardown where the cell is disassembled. The teardown took 4 hours and this video compresses that down to 1 hour. The data/characterization will be coming soon.
The video is timestamped so you can jump around! Who loves you? 😘
*** Thanks to to Teardown Team at the LESC at UC San Diego!*** Weikang Li (me) (caption) Yijie (Jackie) Yin (chief officer) Varun Gupta (2nd officer) And of course Shirley Meng for making it happen 😀
*** Thanks to COREY CODDINGTON for driving 40 hours round trip to deliver the cell from @HyperChange to UC San Diego!***

Hell I dunno I'm not as smart as you Crissa! 😛

but assuming a 200kw battery pack which = 200,000w

4680 cell = 9a * 3.7 nominal volts = 33.3w

200,000w / 33.3w

Maybe my underlying assumption about the battery pack size is wrong.. that or physics is different after 3 Corona Extras... 🤔

Anyone know then what the wattage is per cell? Approx 75wh/cell?

Remember: if you show your work, then you get extra credit...

I was surprised by the flexibility of the dry lithium strip. I imagined it would be brittle.

Otherwise; It was painful to watch the cell being taken apart by tools that one would find in a kitchen junk drawer.

A dremel and not having to articulate the cell through a haz mat box and thick rubber gloves would have taken 3.5 hours off the time. Lol.

A dremel could create sparks and cause a fire.

The containment was so they could test the materials for their content.

Man, it's solidly built. And those elegant flowers keeping the pressure even... and the tiny amounts of nonconductive material between the button and the can. It really does have both ends on the top!

-Crissa
The crushing force on those cans will be remarkable.

I know, safety first. It was still painful to watch.. lots of scrolling ahead involved for me.

75kWh / 960 cells is ~ 78Wh per cell.

-Crissa
Ahhh so it was my underlying assumption of said cell's energy density that was wrong- got it 👍 thanks Crissa! My research partner Corona has been fired btw (until tomorrow at least)...
