I’d get the FSD purchase while I still could. When unsupervised is released, HW4 will be capable of it or Tesla will have to upgrade you for free. Don’t get the yoke until you’ve got time with the squircle— it’s perfect for me.
Pretty sure when I got my truck May 2025 there's some language in there about tesla not having to provide fsd hardware upgrades.

Just realized Elon made a post last month saying the AI5 chip is “almost done” and they’re working on AI6 already. But he also made a post in July saying AI5 was “finished.”

I ordered mainly for luxe package which could potentially be ending soon (even though it’s like less than a year old?) since fully purchased fsd can’t be purchased after February 14. But what if a HW5 cyberbeast drops a month after I take delivery and my HW4 can’t support unsupervised FSD? Is unsupervised even coming along with ai5? If so will they upgrade my hw4 -> hw5 (for free) since I got luxe package?

maybe model s/x discontinuation, fsd fully purchased ending, and Elon almost becoming a trillionaire are the harbingers of the imminent release of hw5 and unsupervised fsd?

thanks for any insight.

by the way can you put a model s/x yoke in a cybertruck? I much prefer it to the squircle.
Just get it, I'm on HW4 foundation and I was told internally that they have to legally upgrade your hardware at no cost if you have the lifetime. So you got about 4 days to lock it in.

Do you not have FSD?

Here you go, AI4 good to go. https://teslanorth.com/2026/01/20/elon-musk-your-ai4-tesla-is-ready-for-unsupervised-fsd/

HW5 for the CT is likely a couple years out, as is FSDU
Good news is if you buy a HW4 CT and it has FSD Tesla is going to upgrade it so it can run FSDU
Go buy the truck, you will love it, not worth waiting on "better one in 3 years"

AI5 will probably be here in 18 months not 3 years

With the new language all bets are off after warranty expires unless im reading it wrong.
Ohh no worries, then you're good 👍🏼 you got the AI4 hardware so FSDU will be good. If they come out with something better then yeah will probably have to go out of pocket. Honestly I'm good with FSDU and whatever they come up with that's better like NASCAR mode or something that would require a AI5 id rather be the operator for that anyway 🤣🇺🇸

I agree. Now I see my issue and its a familiar one🙈 I assumed all cybertrucks were AI4. We have a HW3 Y performance we paid the $15k for FSD. Im really hoping they upgrade for free to achieve the FSDU.

There's talk of a Lite version of FSDU that'll work with HW3, not sure what that means exactly or what sacrifices that entails. Ultimately it'd be awesome if they beefed it up at no charge but there are avenues for HW3 that may work for most.

“THE SQUIRCLE” is the most comfortable steering wheel I have ever used. Absolutely love it! Have no idea why someone wouldn’t like the squircle, yes I know change is hard. In fact the squircle is so comfortable I want to put one in my Y.

HW5! Yes waiting on the cyberbeast to have HW5 before i reserve another one of these awesome vehicles.
Do you really expect Tesla to invest in incremental design changes for the CT while it sells 1,000 per month?

Grok:
Tesla's **AI5 chip** (also referred to as HW5, the next-generation self-driving/FSD computer hardware) is still in the design phase as of early 2026. Elon Musk stated in mid-January 2026 that the AI5 design is "almost done" (following an earlier claim in 2025 that it was "finished," indicating some revisions or delays). Work on its successor, AI6, is already in early stages, with Tesla aiming for rapid 9-month design cycles going forward.

Volume production (enough units for widespread vehicle integration) is delayed to **mid-2027**, per multiple confirmations from Musk and reports. Samples or limited/early production may start in late 2026 or early 2027, but not at scale sufficient for mass vehicle rollout until around mid-2027. This timeline has slipped from earlier expectations (e.g., late 2025/early 2026 in some prior statements).

Regarding the **Cybertruck** specifically: No, AI5 is not expected to be installed in Cybertrucks when it becomes ready. Current Cybertrucks use earlier hardware (like HW4/AI4). New models or refreshes would likely need the updated chip for integration, but reports indicate that even upcoming vehicles like the Cybercab (robotaxi, targeted for 2026 production) are planned to launch on existing **AI4 hardware** due to the AI5 delay. There's no confirmed plan for retrofitting or immediate Cybertruck adoption of AI5 upon its availability—new production lines or models would incorporate it first, potentially starting with premium or new vehicles before broader rollout (e.g., to 3/Y or Cybertruck variants).

This is based on the latest public updates from Musk and reliable sources as of early February 2026—timelines can shift, as they've done before in Tesla's hardware roadmaps. For the most current info, check Tesla's official channels or Musk's X posts.

That may be. But, since I already own a Cybertruck and will likely not get rid of it, I'd rather it be held in high esteem than be a laughingstock... Historically speaking, of course.
If you like the vehicle, why do you care what other people think?
