Yes, he did. He called it an "amnesty" but I do not know what he means by a "one-time transfer in Q3 only". He did say that you will have to order in Q3 so it would probably not apply to any/many of us :-(

One time for order of new vehicle, subject to “a reasonable delivery date window”

on one optimistic read, they open configuration/orders for CT and want to incentivize order conversion, particularly for those CT units that will be likely to be delivered within [X] months from Q3 end

Eg if you’re one of the folks offered to order a 350mi version immediately delivering in [1H of ‘24], you can transfer FSD but if you instead order a 500mi version not expected to deliver until [2H of ‘24], you can’t

the above just a hypo to illustrate the incentive

Even if we ordered in Q3 2019?

I'm not thrilled by this. This should be a permanent policy, not a carrot and stick attempt to raise demand before Highland refresh, CT, etc show up.

Do the right thing, Tesla, and make FSD transferable permanently.

It's difficult, because people will transfer their FSD without updating their used car records. So someone is going to buy a used car, be told it has FSD, then find out it was yoinked and Tesla will have the black eye for it.

If Tesla buys the used car with FSD for resale, they can set a deadline of transfer before the sale to Tesla closes.

If it's a third party sale, they have the responsibility to advertise correctly what they are selling (and therefore know what they are buying/taking in trade). If anyone misrepresents what they are selling, we have laws for that.

I don't see those as reasons for Tesla to not do the right thing and allow FSD transfer.

Once FSD gets fully developed, the idea will be to sell the current vehicle you have with FSD and then roll that cash over into the new vehicle you want with FSD. Kind of like a transfer but the FSD will be the one applicable to the vehicle you are buying.

This will also end up bifurcating the automarket between specific vehicles that already have FSD purchased on them (the expensive ones) and those that have never had FSD purchased (the dirt cheap ones). You will be able to buy a dirt cheap vehicle and then rent FSD if you want but at some point the best deal will be to shell out for the upfront purchase of FSD and then keep that cash rolling forward in any vehicle you buy in the future.

Q: Have you considered allowing FSD transferability as a lever to allow existing customers to upgrade to a new Tesla instead of being locked in to existing cars due to price of FSD?

A: Yeah this is a question we get asked a lot. We’re excited to announce that for Q3 we will be allowing transfer of FSD. This is a one-time amnesty. You need to take advantage of it in Q3. Or at least place the order in Q3, within reasonable delivery time frames. I hope this makes people happy. But this is a one-time thing.

I could see that happening but it [might] only applies to the first few thousand at best and isn’t worth 150 miles of range.

Was this specific to just the CT or the whole Tesla range?
