Hey CT Gang,

Thrilled to finally get my schedule delivery message today but of course I find myself all over the place these next 40 days.

I am traveling July 24th-August 12th and then again August 24-Sept 2nd.

Pick up options right now are July 28, 29, 30.

AWD Grey CT 23xxx VIN

The employee messaging me through Tesla app is saying I am going to lose my VIN if myself or someone I know can't pick up those dates. They would put my order on a temporary hold, and I would need to message them to get a new VIN assigned once back from traveling. They are not able to give an estimate on delivery once new VIN is assigned.
  • I've read the 3 day window moves back each day you don't select on the app, anyone seen this?
  • I only have 1 person I somewhat trust to pick up for me, but he's never driven a Tesla before and wouldn't be insured on the car. Only a 6 minute non highway drive though. But then I have the car sitting for 2 weeks in my driveway unattended.
  • Have also read if you give up VIN, some people have been reassigned earlier VINs that were possibly returned / factory restored for lack of a better term.
  • Other people saying they still haven't gotten a new VIN after few weeks and are glued to the app checking 15 times a day.
  • Also would hate to get back on the 12th, get new VIN assigned and not be able to pick up round 2 when I'm traveling again on the 24th.
Sucks to have to deal with this after wiring $100k+ after waiting 4 years.

Any feedback and thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks.

Just pick up the car and drop it off somewhere to get wrapped. That way it’s being looked after during your trip. Fly in, pick up the ride, drop it off, and get back to your trip. By the way, I was told that only the registered owner can pick it up.

after all the waiting, the three-day windows deosn't seem like a long wait. Go with July 28, 29, 30?

If it’s hard to interrupt your trip then what about accepting the last date but keep on trying to bump it back a few days. In the meantime, take care of everything to include paying for it on the day of. If it doesn’t work out that you can be there on that fateful day just go through with it. It will be yours even if you’re not there. When you fail to drive it off the lot they will contact you and then you can ask them nicely to put it in the back lot for a week for you. The bottom line is they don’t want an unsold truck. It won’t be.

You didn't have to wire the money in advance of delivery in Florida. That only happens in states that don't allow Tesla to sell directly to the buyers.

It just seems like there are multiple stories of people getting delayed after accepting their delivery date anyway. And stories of those getting the silent treatment after asking for a hold because of a trip.

I know purchasing sight unseen goes against conventional wisdom but my experience with Tesla over multiple vehicles is they are a great company and don’t want to screw the customer even if they can be so frustrating before you purchase. If something isn’t right when you go to pick it up just put in a service request and include a photo or two and you’ll be totally covered.

I have already wired payment in full. In Tesla I trust, I just don’t want to have to pay $500+ round trip to pick it up and if I can’t pick up those dates I don’t want to lose VIN and get a potentially flawed one assigned.

I was facing a similiar problem since the delivery window when I configured my Cybertruck was through the end of September & I would be gone on an extended vacation for 6 weeks. My plan was to get a Limited Power of Attorney for my son to take delivery, but I hadn't yet confirmed Tesla would accept it when my VIN (23xxx) was assigned two weeks ago with the possibility of delivery this coming weekend.

I know you’re reluctant to have your friend drive it, but wanted to mention this POA option to you anyway. Just confirm Tesla will accept it if you think you might want to pursue it.

Good luck!

My SC just agreed to allow an Aug 5 pick up when my girlfriend is back in town. Case closed!

This is a relatively common situation and there is no great answer.
If you can't get the vehicle, Tesla will release it to the next in line. They will not be able to tell you when you will get another although it seems as if it may only be a short delay.

And AFAIK, you can't get "someone" to pickup the vehicle, it tends to be only the person on the contract. You may get lucky if they do. Adding someone to your insurance temporarily isn't a big deal.

Don't worry about getting a reassigned VIN. After all, why would Tesla have reassigned VINs sitting around? Because people weren't able to pick up their vehicles?

My SC has confirmed twice in messages that I can have someone else pick it up for me. They were the one's to first suggest it. I told them my girlfriend will be there with app access and they said 'Sounds good'. Hopefully she doesn't crash : )
