Volkswagen could launch an electric pickup truck in the United States.

While featured on a recent episode of the Autoline After Hours podcast, Volkswagen of America senior vice president of product marketing and strategy Hein Schafer said the flexibility of the company’s MEB platform could allow it to venture into new segments of the auto industry, including the growing market for electric pickup trucks.

“[The MEB] does give us potentially the opportunity to bring some kind of small midsize pickup or maybe something a little bit larger,” Schafer revealed.

Schafer also said the German car manufacturer could even launch a large, all-electric pickup.

“It wouldn’t be a myth to think potentially about something larger on the BEV platform, too,” he said. “If we do build a large SUV on the BEV platform, then a large pickup might also make sense.”

As noted by Motor1, this isn’t the first time someone from VW has expressed interest in an electric pickup. In fact, VW’s board member for electric mobility, Thomas Ulbrich, stated in 2020 that such a vehicle was possible.

“Step by step our investigation and research makes us think it becomes more possible,” he said.

Of course, Volkswagen has a lot of other electric vehicles in the works for the U.S. market. Following the recent launch of the ID.4, the car manufacturer announced last week that a production version of the electric ID.Buzz van will come to America in 2023.

And this is what it could look like.
Volkswagen is already one of the biggest manufacturers in the world, but it is showing no signs of slowing down. Its new Amarok is coming soon, and its electric revolution is in full swing with the German brand saying that it will no longer develop new combustion engines.

As the marque moves away from internal combustion engines, spawning new vehicles from an electric platform could be relatively easy to achieve. Some have even wondered if an electric Volkswagen pickup could be offered.

Responding to such a question in an online Q&A, Hein Schafer, VW's senior VP of product marketing, says that such a vehicle could happen, but it would have to be electric and would thus not rival the Ford Maverick. Watch from 25:36 to hear his take on this potential new vehicle.

Schafer is typically careful not to confirm anything early, but his response is fairly open to interpretation too. He's neither too circumspect nor too assertive about the possibility of an electric pickup for the States and mentions how a larger SUV than the ID.4 could be on the cards and would provide the ideal platform for a pickup to be built from, but it seems that if such a vehicle does get the go-ahead, it would run on VW's existing MEB architecture and not be spawned from Project Trinity.

Of course, none of this is confirmation that an electric pickup will be made, but when representatives of an automaker don't outright say no to something, you can be sure that they have at least considered the possibility already.

We've also seen a concept for such a vehicle after Volkswagen revealed the Atlas Tanoak in 2017, but early last year, Volkswagen's chief operating officer Johan de Nysschen said that such a vehicle for the North American market was "not even on the discussion...for the next five years."

That could be taken to mean that Volkswagen would only consider building such a vehicle from 2025, or you could be more positive about his words and take them to mean that the groundwork is already laid and the new pickup will debut in 2025. Only time will tell what Volkswagen has in store, but we're quietly optimistic that we'll see an electric truck from Wolfsburg soon enough.

Just my thoughts.... is it why VW put another $100 VW million investment tranche to QS tomorrow? Perhaps they will have Solid-State Batteries fortheir pickup truck?

VW is supposedly the main challenger for Tesla, into the future. Some feel that VW is positioned to be the only one capable of truly competing. I believe that this is a bunch of BS until someone emerges from the late comers. It's telling that "those in the know" don't believe in Rivian, Lordstown or even Hummer. peace

How many more stories about what VW is "Going to do" will I read before actually going to see any product on the road?

Yeah, VW is very involved with the U.S. market conceptually. :ROFLMAO:
Edit: I forgot Porsche and Audi belong to VW, plus they did make some E-Golf cars. It just iratates me how all these companies keep stringing us along, with concepts and lies for years.

You can see from my profile photo, I am an Old School VW owner. I'm looking forward to VW becoming what they used to be. If they can produce a true EV model, all the better.
