From the article:

Wayne spotted the Cybertruck on the side of the road next to the Interstate 280 El Monte exit in Los Altos Hills, and a Tesla employee was working under the hood of the vehicle.

By the time he turned around to go back to the electric truck, the employee had covered the Cybertruck and abandoned it. This indicates that it likely broke down, and Tesla needed to come pick it up.

Now, before Cybertruck haters say that the truck is doomed, it is quite normal for vehicles to break down during test programs. In fact, the more you manage to make them break down during the test program, the less they are likely to break down during production – if you can find the sources of the failures and fix them.

Now after seeing this, to those of you that wanted to jump in front of the line, are you still jumping? I am mighty comfortable with my 700K spot.

Yes, it is part of the testing process. I followed the development of the Corvettes.

A C5 broke down. The cause was a 50 cent washer in the fuel system. I believe this was recounted in the GM video I got with the car.

On the C7, a tester wrecked one navigating a rocky curve. I think I saw that on Jalopnik.

It happens.

Absolutely. However CT is so new and so different that is hard to believe Tesla engineers can think of everything. Rivian tested the crap out of their truck but there were still things they didn’t think of about how people use them. They designed the ruck around the gear tunnel but people ended up getting stitches from the sharp edge of the door. People complain about the gravel in bed going into holes they could not get to, ……. Testing issue is magnified with trucks. Unlike sedans, people use their trucks in ways that is hard to predict. It takes real life feedback to get it right.

The government uses the Limited Rate Initial Production (LRIP) on new procurement items. A good way to make sure the product goes together the most efficient way and operates as it should. Looks like Musk took a tip from the military on this.
