Ordered some sample tint film to compare. Went with Avery Dennison Nano Ceramic IR (20% front / 50% rear). Will change the front to 15% to match better w/ the rears as the front is a few % lighter than the rear.

The 50% tint color hues are very different from each vendor. Also, the Llumar IRX 50% metered close to 60% VLT, the other 50% metered closer to 50% VLT.

I want to tint my windows for privacy….discouraged to learn that any tint below 70 is “illegal” yet I see many cars with all sorts of tint below 70 vlt. I’m currently planning on 70 on the windshield and 50 on all the other windows…..this is slightly chickening out from 50 all the way around…but I could easily be convinced to go 70 all the way around too…. What to do?

70% is too light and won't provide much privacy. Even at 20% front window and non-tinted windshield, you can still see a little inside the vehicle.

I did 70%, was not dark enough. Fortunately there was a fault with the tint, and when they redid the job they went to 50%. Much better light management, no issues at night, and I have issues with night vision. I paired that with a 5% sun visor strip which is also a welcomed addition for sun glare. Can still see light changes with no issues through strip.
GL with your choice, and law enforcement!

Go as dark as you want. In Florida it’s quite easy. They cannot stop a vehicle for tints and if your stopped for something else roll your driver and passenger window down completely. As for the windshield they cannot enter your vehicle to measure it. Mine are very dark and everyone I know has dark tints. Watch some YouTube videos on tints. Mine were done at a shop that customize tons of brand new vehicles and all are super dark.

This is what I went with. I'm super happy with the look from the outside, and with the sides matching and dark, it makes looking in from the windshield difficult, even though it's only tinted with 70% darkness. The heat rejection is also very good.

Yeah, going with 15% front and 50% rear will give you a more uniform look. There will be some lightness in the front for vehicles with non-tinted windshields.

Also, VLT % isn’t always accurate from what’s on the box vs off the roll. Your tinter can double check using a meter.

Why add tint to the roof? Isn’t it already tinted? Would this be for heat rejection?

Exactly, extra heat rejection.

it was expensive to get it all tinted but should pay for itself over 80 years by keeping the truck cooler, which reduces the times Cabin Overheat Protection kicks on, that saves me precious energy so I can save a buck or two a day.

There's a couple approved sellers here that sell DIY Tint Kits. They appear to use Avery Dennison (Nano Ceramic IR or Encore Supreme IR). I installed the Nano Ceramic IR version and it's been good (20% front / 50% rear). Will redo them as I want to go darker as 20% doesn't provide enough privacy under certain conditions.

Adding 70% to your front side windows would equate to be about 40% - 56% VLT (depending on what type of meter is used). Rear side windows are about 23-25% VLT.

I've purchased different brands of tint online (eg 3m, Llumar, Suntek, Sun Gard etc). Be aware that if you buy a DIY Kit or bulk film, there's no guarantee that it will be name brand film unless you purchase it from an authorized dealer. I got a couple and tested them using a meter and they didn't match or closely match the manufacturer specs in regards to VLT, Infrared Rejection etc. So just be aware.

Avery Dennison Nano Ceramic IR 5% front / 15% back, no windshield tint. Front metered at 4% vlt and rear 2.4% vlt. Would suggest going to 20% in the rear to get closer to front vlt %.

I haven’t gotten my front windshield done yet. But it seems like I should if we want greater heat reduction.
