Technically, you're always doing math in your head. A sixteenth is twice as large as a thirty-second, and honestly, it's bad design to be changing increments like that anyhow.

But F is actually more specific than C - twice as much, actually - also it's human-scale. Once you hit 0 seawater is freezing, and few people go there, and a 100 is similarly dangerous,

I was thinking about metric there. 5 is less than 8. I don’t need math for that.

I’m brexiting this conversation
Well that’s a damp squib.

Was just a chin wag!

Hope we didn’t cause you the collywobbles?

Have a spiffing spend-a-penny and a kip, and you’ll be all tickety-boo!

Me? I’m off to talk up the metric system while having a pint.

Techinically that is math. There is a whole area of math called Number Theory.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_theory

Inside Number Theory, there is the specific study of Integers. Integers themselves have specific properties and characteristics. Among those are the Order-theoretic properties. That specifies the information needed to know that 5 is less than 8.

Most people are just told that 5 is less than 8 and they just memorize that factoid. But the only reason it exists is because of the underlying math.

But is a pico smaller or larger than a nano or micro and does anyone really use deci or keta?

And then you type it into Google and you hope you get the terms right and the right number of zeros.

If I remember my classes correctly, a micro is 10^(-6), a nano is smaller still at 10^(-9), and the smallest is a pico at 10^(-12).

One of the greatest computer scientists in history was a Rear Admiral in the Navy named Grace Hopper. She would hold up a wire, just under a foot long, and explain that this is how far electricity (and light) would travel in a nanosecond. Seeing that visualization really impresses on you that the speed of light is not instant as we perceive it.

Love Jim Breuer one of my favorite stories he had was before he made it as a comedian he worked at a Sears store, he was always goofing on the store phone he called another employee in the hardware department Jim was claiming to be from a middle eastern country and was going to bomb the store seems the employee was a serious type and believed it hook, line and sinker. Long story short the feds got involved and after interviewing Jim they had a good laugh

I just thought of something fun. Long ago, I bought a cheap, small Harbor Freight utility trailer. When assembling it, I found that the bolt heads were metric, as you'd expect, but the nuts required SAE drivers. Overall, it was useful, since then I had more options. "Grab me the 15mm and the 19/32." <Wife thinks I'm insane>

This past month or so, my home wood shop became semi-metric. I bought a couple of EU-centric tools that came with mostly metric markings, and some that have both. Meh, I can work with either, so I started to. But with a lifetime of using SAE for wood, and 98% of wood sold here being SAE, I've been converting the scales on some to SAE. While I *could* buy 19mm sheets of EU plywood, I'm far more likely to get 3/4. And yeah, those are the "same," but not.

I somtimes mill my own lumber to metric, which is fine, and easy. But then what if I go and need pre-dimensioned material that's SAE...

Long boring story over, we should get to know both.
