Do they need to open source it? They already offered to let companies buy superchargers that they can install at their own locations. If they just start producing more and more superchargers, could they just meet the full market demand and let others install/maintain them? What if they just made a generic version of the supercharger and let other networks put their own branding on them?

Listing the various options in level of comfort I'd have using them I get a list like this:

Tesla built, branded, installed and maintained: I'm all in.
Tesla built, branded, installed; external company maintained: a little less happy.
Tesla built, branded; external company installed and maintained: less happy again.
Tesla built; external company branded, installed, and maintained: less happy again.
External company built, branded, installed, and maintained: that's a big NAH.

Even if the external company used an open source schematic for the chargers I'd feel this way till there was ample (and then even more ample on top of that) evidence that they external company had built out a network that was reliable, safe, and user friendly. Then MAYBE I'd try the external company.

TorqueNews talked about it. I have to wonder why they're going with such a high voltage. I know it's the amps that kill but I have to wonder about Hyundai's ability to protect the driver while charging and operating at such a high voltage. At least it won't have hydrogen in it's vehicles. Isn't that what the Hidenburg was filled with? Analysts complain about battery fires, what about the extremely high voltage in Hyundai's and hydrogen fuel ICE vehicles? I'd rather have a slightly longer charging time (waiting for new batteries to charge faster at "regular" voltage) than having companies push for really high voltages.

Higher voltage = better efficiency, cabling can be thinner, less heat is produced


I am not more concerned about battery safety when comparing 450 volts to 800 if something is going to happen the voltage differences won’t matter. There is a lot of talk of Tesla coming out with a 900+ volt architecture for CT.

Tesla Supercharger is just supplying power and not the charger I am pretty sure the Hyundai EVs are smart enough to detect lower voltage and adjust if charging from a Tesla 250 KW source

Tesla open sourced the schematics for anyone and everyone to use without so much as licensing fees.

To be fair, releasing the NACS patents and opening the Tesla supercharger network are two different things.

it’s one thing to say “here’s how to build a NACS adaptor/port … whatever you guys want to do with it.

It’s another thing entirely to say, “and we’ll agree to let you come into our Tesla supercharger stations, create software for your vehicle that flanges with ours, and allow our software to communicate with it.”

That’s a much broader and critical set of permissions and commercial arrangements involved here.

Are you saying External companies that may not even exist yet with the quality of the product we don’t know about should not have the chance to win us over? If they fail to produce a competitive product and service, I am sure plugshare makes sure they don’t get our business but not having the chance to even try? Even if Tesla end up being the best until the end of time, you need others to know it is the best. Why would any consumer want a monopoly? I must be misunderstanding what you are saying.
