Blame Erik the Red.
Grew up in Iceland knowing how hard it was to get settlers to move there.
So when he discovered Greenland he named it more optimistically as a marketing ploy.

I’m not sure. But I’m saving my money to go to Old Zealand first. Sequels are rarely as good.

And New Zealand is not new. I have dubbed this Setok’s rule of country naming: if it has an adjective in the name, it is not whatever it says (think also names like ‘Democratic such and such’)
