It takes alot of energy to make. And some of it escapes into the atmosphere. They will probably try to balance their production emissions (if it gets that far) with alot of trading of dodgy carbon credits.

-Crissa
If the required production energy is derived from renewables, then the product is still carbon-neutral. Making hydrocarbons by removing CO2 from the air is much better proposition than burning the underground carbon that's been sequestered for 100 million years.

Of course, it will never achieve price parity with oil until that source becomes far more scarce.

No. Your entire process is applied the to calculation, not just the feedstocks.

The lost energy from transmission, storage, and charging are calculated into the price of miles in an EV and their carbon footprint.

So the energy, emissions, and losses will be applies to e-fuel.

It just can't be neutral, not in our current markets, not with volatile organics.

For your pedantic half, I offer the following compromise:

"Compared to fuel derived from subterranean oil reserves, eFuel produced from CO2 using renewable energy is carbon-neutral."

Compared to, but ignoring losses for inefficiency...

It's just greenwashing.

Inefficiency? Such as oil exploration, drilling, transport, and refining?

It's not greenwashing. It's a pathway to sustainability. Any fuel-burning engine is highly inferior to EV transport of course, but fuel-burning engines will take decades if not generations to fully replace, and something needs to power them until then. Personally I'd rather use a fuel that doesn't involve releasing the sequestered carbon.

Comparing it to fossil fuels is disingenuous, since there are already BEVs that beat then on the market.

There's no place for "e-fuels".

OBELISQ in French (I had to skip the last two letters but reads the same) would be perfect in English: Obelisk

Worship of the Sun god..... a frozen ray for eternity. Mathematical rigor was necessary to realize. Men wanted to surpass themselves in their realization: totally Cybertruck.
