Who says they had full drums? Or that the gun did not malfunction?
Tesla Cybertruck Bulletproof tested Cybertruck spotted!! Musk confirms: "No bullets penetrated into the passenger compartment." [⚠️ ADMIN WARNING: NO POLITICS] B6DAAB92-8DF8-4176-98A9-3AFCC440ACFE

In any event, don’t take my comment the wrong way

I don’t take Musk’s missives on Xwitter to be carefully crafted, or accurate. He’s more of a Gestalt xweeter

and in any event, I was being somewhat tongue-in-cheek towards @greggertruck for other reasons

but I do know for a fact that this CT was not the only vehicle that got sprayed that day at GFTX … the other vehicle didn’t fare as well (as expected)

From an advertising angle it's fairly genius though, if not a bit macabre, given the state of the world.
yeah this is where we depart

from a marketing perspective, I think it appeals to a limited subset of society, who for the most part I’d rather the CT not become the dog whistle

and, I’d usually say “I can’t believe the general counsel ever let an auto manufacturing company even glance in the direction of this sort of assertion”

but with Tesla, they of course can’t keep a GC on payroll (unless it’s musk’s divorce lawyer) - so I can totally believe it

I think you might be underestimating how many people have a nagging feeling in the back of their minds with the wars that are going on and since the lockdowns.

On any other day of the week I'd agree, but the fear and the mongering of it is real, and that moves the needle.

In a somewhat childish way, I think EM wanted to promote it, because he thinks it would be helpful to alleviate that. I think this might be a part of his "process" to work the problem.

The solution is obviously not a complete one, but in the end you have to start somewhere. BMW do a in-house armoured vehicle from the factory line, for a fraction of the cost of a custom built, so not really that far fetched if they can get the windows optioned up. EM might gauge the reaction to this and offer the same, at an even lower cost point.

As a matter of clarification:

If you do not fill the drum up because you only have 71 rounds of ammunition, and you fire all the rounds in the drum, you HAVE emptied the drum.

Thus endth the lesson on the dynamics of firearms magazines and drums.

Do you find lessons about ‘facts’ often change the humor of jokes?

FYIW, he said “entire” drum - which to fuel the joke took him at strict face value

Now we know that at least the doors are 3mm stainless.

NO. The doors are NOT 3mm stainless. Most vehicle doors are make of two primary materials (metal & glass).

All we know is that the "BOTTOM HALF" of Cybertruck door might be 3mm stainless.

I know you're being somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but it touches on part of the point

there is zero practical utility to having “bullet-resistance” in the panels or windows of a volume production vehicle

the utility is in it being more immune to don’ts, dings, and chipped glass from all the usual cases

which tee’s up the dumbness here: anyone who is both (A) actually purchasing the CT for this bullet resistance, and (B) has any material intent/likelihood of needing to rely on it, is an (all caps) IDIOT

If instead doing only (A), I wouldn’t tell any one person how to spend their $, but to pitch it to others?
Not idiots but just regular people. People who think EV batteries need replace every 3 years and that visiting gas stations is better than home charging.

They don't know "bulletproof" vs only metal part of door might be bullet resistant to 9mm handgun while the glass half of door which a carjacker or other criminal will shoot through or point their gun at you is NOT.

This whole thing will give lots of regular people a false sense of security.

Wow, so I had it all wrong?

I thought the undesirables were the carjackers & criminals on the OUTSIDE who threaten the Cybertruck driver & passengers. Not the regular mass market person on the INSIDE who bought a $50K-$80K Cybertruck.

I guess I just personally find it absurd to think anyone would legitimately factor into their vehicle buying decision “oh, and it can take a bullet if I find myself in a situation where I’m catching strays”

Seems to me the chance of that is so infinitesimal as to be a ridiculous consideration, or that person is essentially making choices based upon a completely false sense of security.

Which means that the only thing more absurd than a person factoring this into their buying decision is a car company making a point of pitching it as a feature while using words like “Al Capone” and “Tommy gun”

Case in point: a member here was just overnight, with no irony or criticism, suggesting this truck was shot up by someone standing in close range firing auto bursts at immobile 3mm SS, not on a hinged swing, that they expected to deflect the rounds. As though any person doing so shouldn’t fairly be called an idiot.

Trained firearm professionals would only ever conduct such a test using a remote firing system and a ransom machine rest.

Call me old-fashioned, but this sort of modern trend towards cavalier firearm glorification by reckless noobs gives a bad name to those of us raised by generations of sportsmen who passed on a deep respect for firearm safety.

To see an automobile manufacturer venture into these noob ranks is, to me, just wild and off-putting.

Somebody dug into this on Twitter, but I guess there’s some 75 round magazines now as well?
Regardless of mag capacity, the firearm stops firing when you run out of ammunition. If you put 70 rounds into a 100 round drum, trust me (I’m not citing sources, so trust me) the firearm will stop firing after 70 “bangs”. It will still sound and feel like a full mag, if you don’t fire one on a regular basis.
