Hello, Cybertruck enthusiasts

I've been part of this amazing community for a while, soaking up the wisdom and camaraderie you all generously share. Your guidance has been a beacon through my journey of anticipation and patience for the Cybertruck, a symbol of innovation and personal aspiration for me.

I'm reaching out today for your insights on a dilemma that's weighing heavily on me. Six months ago, I couldn't imagine seeking advice ?, but I've come to value this community's spirit of support and kindness. ?

The 4years journey to the Cybertruck's launch has been my solace and motivation, mirroring my hopes for a brighter future amidst personal challenges. My reservation number is 11292xxxx, and recently, I've been presented with two options:

1. Opt for the AWD Foundation Series at $99,000 today, potentially receiving it by the end of 2024.

2. Wait for the regular AWD model at $80,000, ( my best guess the option will likely become available by fall of 2024), with delivery by the end of 2025, allowing me to save more money and use more money to personalize truck later.

Initially, I leaned towards the second option for its financial prudence and soundness. However, life threw me a curveball I hadn't anticipated. My marriage has been struggling, and despite my best efforts, it seems we're at an impasse. This turmoil threatens the financial stability required for buying the Cybertruck, a dream that's been a beacon of hope for me. There is a risk that either my wife initiates a divorce or that I may have to trigger the divorce myself if the situation gets totally out of control or my kids' wellbeing is impacted in a bad way.

Given these circumstances, I'm contemplating securing the Cybertruck sooner through the first option, despite the financial stretch it represents. This decision feels like a crucial step to preserve a piece of my future dreams amid the storm.

I'd love to hear your thoughts:
  • How would you navigate this choice?
  • If I commit to the AWD Foundation Series now, when must I finalize financing?
  • Is it possible to switch to the regular AWD later without losing my reservation spot, even if it means forfeiting the deposit?
  • Any advice on proceeding with my Cybertruck dream if a divorce is imminent?

Your wisdom and support mean the world to me during this crossroads. Thank you for lending an ear and sharing your insights.

I'd say wait, if you can't pay for it in cash. Financing a vehicle only makes sense at the bottom of their price range, or to make sure you have wheels to get to work (or play).

That's the option I'm taking. Heck, I may still have to bow out then, $80k is waaay too much for me to pay for a truck.

If you have the $ and are using it for a 2nd or 3rd fun vehicle, BUY IT
If you are going to use it as your daily driver WAIT until the problems get fixed
If you want to use it as a work truck WAIT until they expand the battery, or buy a Silverado EV

Money is often the cause of strife. If it isn't the cause, it often contributes.
Which half of the Cybertruck do you want to keep?

Get your priorities in order. A Cybertruck is definitely not on the top.

Sell the wife, buy the truck = Profit

In all seriousness, wait and buy later.. Dealing with your situation and worried about a truck seems a lot to take in.
thank you for your reply

I stand to lose a lot of money if a divorce is triggered and may end up with kids custody too, since my wife doesn't seem to care.

as my thinking stands now: $20k is a small fraction to lose in the big picture of family falling apart. the marriage... I probably cannot save and I need to get used with that idea. But the truck , I can... if I get it before the divorce... all assets and debts are shared... so I figured if I had a financed truck I could keep it and have my transportation problem solved for life in a unique way... and all the potential lifestyle changes that come with it.

Either get counseling or a diverse but get to solid footing.
Skip the CT for now. It will only get better for purchase later this year or next.
Once on a solid footing emotionally and financially, then revisit the CT.
it’s actually a clear path.
Good luck

thank you. saving my fam is my top priority but it takes two to do it. I don't want to bore the audience here with details but I am sharing only 10% or reality in a less negative light so it looks like an intellectual exercise and not an emotional one.

rhetorical Q: what is the real cost of emotions? so far I tried my best not to factor them in.

all my life I lived prudently. I don't have debt other than the house mortgage. no man toys other than a used ping pong table :) .. I could hardly call that a toy when looking around to what many men ( and women! ) have as their "toys".

I never bought a new car because what Crissa said ... it is wasteful by comparison with investment or spending on other long term assets... just not the best use of resources.... I still hold that belief... except for one vehicle: the Cybertruck! that became my imaginary "toy" ... the only toy I would own.. you know how they say a man should have the best horse and the best sword he can muster?

most of our money are in the house, which is located in a very expensive area but has a perfectly low mortgage right now. I figured we need the house for another 7y or so, then we'll move on anyway. if a divorce happens until then, we are likely to have to sell the house earlier... if the CT is bought before divorce, it is likely that I get to keep it, and then I won't have to buy another vehicle.

No material acquisition will fulfill you, nor will it provide you with a beacon of hope. If it will cause any type of financial distress, pass. Spend the money on a psychoanalyst. If you can afford one of the models, get it! Hang in there, the suns always there sometimes hiding behind the clouds.

Sure, you get to keep the truck, but then $100,000 is subtracted from your side of the settlement.

And an expensive purchase can be used against you.

Get what makes you happy! We can die tomorrow. As long as you are able to keep your kids safe and you be happy and can pay your bills, that is all that matters!!

1. Stop discussing your marriage in public. In a contentious divorce, your social media posts will become evidence.
2. Get actual legal advice. State laws vary in regards to division of marital assets.
3. Live your dream. The kids will love the truck lol

Tough situation with the divorce. Totally sucks. My two cents:

First, as others have mentioned, do whatever it takes to save your marriage if that is possible. Counseling, etc. THAT is the most important thing. If you have done everything you can, then either the marriage will be saved or it will not be.

As for the CT, keep the decision to buy distinct from the divorce. However, I have seen numerous instances in which a divorce wrecks individuals financially. If that occurs, you may not be able to purchase it later. Conclusion: if you are able to purchase it now and still take care of the kiddos, you won't regret getting the CT. You will regret not getting it, whether that is now or later. Good luck!

Wife or Cybertruck?. I pick the Cybertruck. That was easy. Let me know if you have any other life questions. FYI, You will also be the coolest Mr. Mom when you shuttle the kids around. ;)
