2025 Cybertruck now listed as eligible for $7500 federal tax credit

I predict Tesla will be pulling the Cybertruck demand lever again, and soon.

There is currently zero financial incentive for potential buyers to purchase a 2024 over a 2025. Conventional auto dealerships heavily discount last year's model to make room for the new model year.

The Tesla online order page shows that I can take delivery today of an AWD CT. They must have unsold inventory on their lot.

I'm also in California. I just checked the AWD CT order page for zip codes for major cities throughout the state -- LA, Santa Ana, SF, Oakland, San Jose, San Diego, Sacramento, Fresno, Bakersfield. They all came back as "Available Today".

And separately, the Tesla inventory page still has Foundation Series CTs available for "Immediate Pickup" in at least the Bay Area, LA area, Santa Barbara, and Fresno.

Looks like most people in California -- which is easily the country's largest BEV market -- can pick up a CT on a nearby lot today, no waiting. Only in more remote parts of the state (like Barstow or Redding) are CTs "Available Jan 2025".

I hate to admit it but a lot of potential BEV shoppers have excluded Tesla from their shopping list because of the CEO. This includes the Cybertruck.

Maybe its the California market, but plenty of 2024 NFS still on the lot next to my service center (I'm only 2 miles away, and its next to an In N Out so lol).

They're not in the inventory sales tab.

Yes, actually.

Plenty in relation to total number of backed inventory.

7% of the 13.32M households in California alone is 932,000.

I could be wrong but I doubt Tesla has over 900k Cybertrucks backlogged to sell, in just California...

Plenty was referring to the set of people who can afford an AWD or Beast Cybertruck and are looking at buying one, not the population as a whole.
So say buckets of 150k to 300k and 300k to infinity.

In general, leases and businesses qualify for 45W credit so don't need to care about 2025 30D eligible versions.

Gonna say there's not plenty, seeing as they have inventory waiting for discounts.

It'll work its way out in the end, I'm sure, the number of vehicles is, in fact small. But less than 10% of trucks are replaced every year, in the first place. 10% of households have no motor vehicles (well, cars and trucks if they had a motorcycle they'd be a house without a car). And trucks, although so popular, are still only 45% of light vehicles sold. All these reduce the addressable market - let alone the 30% who can't charge at home, or buy a competing product.

Plenty of customers that don't qualify for the credit to clear out the non-credit '24s. But it seems not enough willing customers.

In theory, the Tesla Board of Directors could do it. But the Telsa Board is generally assumed to be packed with Elon's friends and family (including his brother Kimbal Musk). The Wall Street Journal recently put it like this:

Board members have reaped hundreds of millions from stock awards and separate investments, even as some have done drugs with Musk ... Most members of Tesla’s current eight-person board have amassed shares worth hundreds of millions of dollars from their seats over the years, significantly more than what board members at other companies make for their service. ... directors of Musk companies have deep personal and financial ties to the billionaire entrepreneur, and have profited enormously from the relationship. The connections are an extreme blurring of friendship and fortune and raise questions among some shareholders about the independence of the boards members charged with overseeing the chief executive.

I don't think that anyone -- not even Musk's supporters -- really believes that the Tesla Board is independent.

And even if Musk was fired as CEO, he would still be Tesla's largest shareholder, since he controls like 20% of the stock. He might cease to be the official public face of Tesla, but he would still have plenty of influence.

Shareholder support will wane and tire. Shareholder pressure and proposals to limit partisan attacks in lieu of more customers will gain support. I'm finding it harder and harder to find Tesla curious from potential customers when just 5 years ago every one of my coworkers wanted to learn about Tesla. Two of whom I got to get a Tesla.
