I'm thinking of passing through Mexico. Anyone travel in Mexico? Any insights would be appreciated.

I've done three major adventure trips through Mexico (and one minor one), two in an open 4x4, one on a Dual Sport motorcycle and one on foot (by bus and train). Unfortunately, I think things have changed somewhat since my last trip (motorcycle) around 2009.

People said things were dangerous in Mexico before I took my first trip in 1983ish (but that was not my impression at all). I do think the level of danger is a bit higher now (but probably manageable by most people). That said, I do think a new high-dollar vehicle probably makes a more obvious target (I always tried to blend in, at least as much as a 6'-04" gringo can).

I think specifying the region would be helpful to the discussion. It’s probably not gonna be the same drive around in Baja versus a place like Matamoros Mexico or the Sonora area. Personally, I probably would think it’s OK during daylight hours on toll roads if you’re not in a flashy vehicle. However, a nice pickup is going to stick out like a sore thumb; and they tend to be sought after by cartel associated people, but I doubt cartel associates are looking to boost an EV truck.

Don't park in downtown Tijuana at night with your windows open and large sums of pesos in your pockets, while cuddling in the back seat with your dogs.

I lived and worked in Mexico for six years. If you plan on taking the CT you will draw more attention from the authorities (law enforcement) and stopped frequently - more from curiosity. I normally rented a low profile vehicle with Mexican plates to blend in better. All you major car rental companies have offices there. Go to travel.state.gov for more specific info.

How are you going to charge it? Are you doing a drive thru to Guatemala? I have been to every gas station in Mexico, except for the center of Mexico City. There are about 200 beaches called "Playa Azul", and they are all great. It takes 4wd and muddy rutted roads to get to many of them on the Gulf of "America" side. Some of the river crossings are hand-pulled barges across some pretty big rivers. Kinda dodgy, but worked for me. I find driving at night quite safe, contrary to all tourist books, largely because most people were scared of my big vehicle (pre-Tesla). Every village seems to have some very effective speed bumps, which only takes one instance to thoroughly learn about, the hard way. Sometimes kids in villages will totally block the road at these speed bumps, surround your car, and not let you pass until you give them money. Just hand everyone some coin pesos, and candy! Everyone smiles and you can pass until the next village...))) All hotels have parking in the yard, so never park overnight on the street. I wonder if gps is accurate in Guanajuato? Plan on spending some hours there getting lost on the roads through the city... tons of fun. Mexican hotels are a lot cheaper than the American style. In restaurants, always order what they are cooking, and not what you think you want. If they are serving fish, and you order chicken, you will wait while they track down a chicken. Go to the local beer factory to buy by the case, then the ice factory, then in the next town, just trade in the case for a new one, and get more ice. You won't discover you have been eaten by sand fleas at the beach until the next day, so put bug spray on your legs first. Lobster might not be on the menu, but ask, because it is there. Have fun )))

There are Tesla superchargers all through out Mexico just like the USA. Also, Cybertrucks are sold in Mexico, so there are Cybertrucks being driven around by Mexican citizens in Mexico.

If you do it, you need to be a hard charger. You need to portray strength and confidence while being able to back it up. Also you'll want to ensure your charging route is good and not in bad areas. If you really want to find out I'd go there on a full charge, drive around for a bit to see what sort of interactions you get and if you feel uncomfortable then just cross back.

(y) I assumed that the Tesla Charger stations would be a decent indication of safe places to begin with. As I doubt they would organize and place stations in dangerous areas. I still have not put the final destination into the truck yet. Probably will today, and see what kind of route I get.
