What would it take to make Tesla move on from the Cybertruck?

Tesla has never followed industry standard practices. Metrics that would dictate moves at other automakers probably don't apply. I bet Tesla rides it out. I think the CT will come into its own as contractors discover its unique advantages.

That's what we said last year without all the hate it gets now. No way that is happening for a long time.

There remains demand. I for one fully intent to purchase AWD once current truck is dead. But every day it becomes more and more tempting to upgrade early. A slight decrease in price or other incentives would likely push me over the line.

Me as well, a price drop on a new 2025 AWD or 0% and I would sign. I think Tesla knows this, but they want to make as much as they can first. After they have exhausted this price bracket, they will drop the price.

The rumor is that Tesla is manufacturing roughly 125 Cybertruck’s trucks per day.

A critical thinking aspect of this is what's the best selling car size+shape (maneuverability and inside volume) for sales not only inside and outside of the USA ... if you are trying to move toward large volume sales.

Yes, and the answer is clear. The best-selling EVs by manufacturer:

-Tesla makes an EV truck, but their best-selling EV is the Model Y (a mid-sized SUV).

-Ford makes an EV truck, but their best-selling EV is the Mustang Mach-e (a mid-sized SUV).

-GM makes EV trucks, but their best-selling EVs are the Chevy Equinox (a compact SUV) and Chevy Blazer (a mid-sized SUV).

-Honda doesn't make an EV truck, but they have a successful EV with the Prologue (a mid-sized SUV).

-Hyundai doesn't make an EV truck, but they have a successful EV with the IoniQ5 (a mid-sized SUV).

etc. etc. For most (all?) major manufacturers, the top selling EV is either a mid-sized SUV or a compact SUV.

So where is Rivian going next? The R2 is a mid-sized SUV. The R3/3X is a compact SUV. And Rivian hopes to sell the R2/R3 in Europe; the larger R1S/R1T have only been sold in North America.

Can the R2 take some sales away from the Model Y? Seems possible. The R2 has a more traditional, outdoorsy SUV design than the MY, which some people will likely prefer. The same difference can be seen in the large SUV category, where the R1S competes with the Model X. And the R1S has outsold the MX in recent quarters.

At this point the only answer is to wait out truck buyers to start buying EV trucks. I don't see any other answer. Seems like it will stay a niche market for the foreseeable future.

I predict the tipping point will be 400+ of “real world” battery pack range from an AFFORDABLE electric pickup truck. The Silverado is currently too expensive. I predict that is when the paradigm shift from Petrol pickups to electric pickups will occur.

Around 3035 we will get a kick out of how large, heavy and limited battery pack range was roughly 10 years ago.

Tesla would only discontinue the Cybertruck if it were losing as much money per truck as legacy EV truck are. In other words, the Cybertruck will continue to roll!

In 2024, it was the Cybertruck. As of 1Q 2025, it was the Ford F-150 Lightning.

Not that it really matters, because neither is selling well. At this time, having "the best-selling electric truck" is not a flex; it's like having the best-selling snowmobile in Florida.

Considering the chaos that was happening in Q1 for Tesla I think the truck did ok in sales. That probably made some buyers avoid it. There should be much less noise the rest of the year. We wil see where it stacks up at the end of the year.

No one is asking in the Ford and GM forums what it would take for Ford or GM to move on from their very low-selling electric trucks. Probably because it's almost as stupid of a question as asking what it would take Tesla to give up on the Cybertruck.
