Yes, wouldn’t it be nice if it was built into the Tesla, it isn’t rocket science, you would think Space X could figure it out. Oh ya, I think Elon knows someone that works over at Space X.
I agree, I heard that it was due to there not being a 48 volt version of the Homelink Module. But there is a 12 source in the ceiling, the CT has a few 12v Accessories.

This can't be the reason, many of the LV accessories are still running on 12V (16V, to be more accurate). The 'bones' of the system is 48V, but a lot of the smaller components are still 16V.

I hate MyQ as well, the app is awful (it's OK in the cars), and maybe 2/10 times the door fails to close for no good reason. That, and the fact that the Tesla version of MyQ cannot open our MyQ gate, that can only be done from the app.

Do you not care to have to cancel homelink when you come home because the doors are already open? Or go to leave and kids are outside and don't want them to close? You can also turn off geo fencing and use push button. Its $45. I do wish it was rolled into the premium cost.
No

There are aftermarket mirrors that have homelink built in. Cheaper than a MyQ subscription.
A few years ago I bought one for my Ford Maverick. They sell new ones for KIa Sportage for $23. I wonder if this would work on a Model Y or CT.

I absolutely hate MyQ and also want Homelink. If I have to manually open or close it, it will send a second command for some reason and open/close it again. So if I open it and pull into the garage it will start to close on my truck. Homelink works so well on our other Tesla's. We are thinking of upgrading my wife's model Y to the new refresh, anyone know if they still have Homelink option for the Model Y refresh?

Gotta disagree here that Homelink is better. It has no awareness of a door being open or closed. So with homelink id show up and it would close doors when I want them open. MyQ is $45 a year for a very expensive truck. And works with all doors and cars you have. I have Homeassistant too, but for the masses, MyQ is the right move here, IMO.
Got it, understand, if it works. But when it doesn’t work, IT IS of NO value.
Seriously though. Isn’t there a simple aftermarket option for homelink?
Ya, but still just a clicker, back to 1970 we go. No auto open or auto close.

As more and more services move to subscription-based models, I expect more home/IOT devices such as garage door openers, start to require subscriptions at least for advanced features or functionality. I suspect we will eventually see washer machines required subscription for advance features (cycles, app access, steam mode, etc.).

Nevertheless, I have helped family and friends fix MyQ challenges by installing a Mesh WiFi network or an additional access-point in their garage.

Tech doesn’t move backwards. Starlink will solve all your problems.

Thought I'd chime in with my experiences with MyQ. When I first started using it (7 months ago), it worked great and I was happy with it (minus the fact that it's a subscription). But things got worse over the past 2-3 months.

Overall, I think it's a product that was built by a company that clearly does not have solid software architecture and development skills.

The MAJOR SECURITY issue MyQ has is: it will automatically reopen the garage door shortly after leaving my house. I've determined it's due to the MyQ servers not keeping track of the state of the garage door position and when a 'close' command was sent from the vehicle. Specifically:
  • When the 'close' command is sent, at the top of the CT screen, you'll see a 'closing' animation. Eventually, it will change to 'closed'.
  • HOWEVER, if I keep driving away from my home BEFORE it says 'closed', 70-95% of the time it (MyQ or the Tesla software?) sends another command to the garage door. This results in my door opening. The only way I know this is when the MyQ iOS app sends me a push notification 10-15mins later telling me my door is open.
    • Oh, and sometimes I get the 'garage door left open' push notification from MyQ when my door is actually closed. WTF.
  • When this issue occurs, sometimes the status of the door on the Tesla screen shows either: 'closed' or "failed'.
  • The ONLY WAY to ensure MyQ doesn't randomly open my garage door is making sure it says 'closed' before I leave my driveway.
So, with a complete lack of trust in MyQ, I've setup a spare indoor webcam that I had in my garage so I can visually see if my door is open or closed when I get push notifications saying my door is left open. If it's open, I'll use the MyQ app to close the door.

Now, I think the root cause is a slightly weak WiFi signal at my MyQ hub...but my webcam streams fine in 1080p and that takes more bandwidth than a MyQ command. Also, I haven't changed the location since I installed it 7 months ago and this issue started happening about 2-3 months ago. And my WiFi mesh network / congestion / etc. has not changed. I'm in the process of changing the location of the hub to see if a better WiFi signal improves this.

To me, the fundamental issue is: the MyQ servers don't do a good job of tracking the state of the door or recent 'close' commands. And, sometimes, the hub loses the state of the door (opened vs closed).

If anyone else has encountered and fixed this issue, would love to hear how you fixed it.

This is a perfect example of building a new improved mousetrap that is ridiculously more complex and expensive...and also extremely unreliable.

So "new", but not "improved". And is why I dug out my old garage remote rather than "upgrade" my garage doors and pay for a subscription for something less reliable than I already have for free.

Very happy for you, it does not work well with out strong cell phone/wifi coverage. The fact that it works for you is great but it does not match the reliability of Homelink in areas with out the connectivity that you enjoy. Both are very true, works well for you. Worthless and a real step backwards for me. MyQ sucks for many of us, I wish Elon knew it. Just go to Amazon reviews and see the stories by people who give one star ratings. Sure many are 5 star ratings. But Elon with dropping Homelink, has made a world of Haves and Have-nots. It would be great to have a classless society when it comes to enjoying the great features of owning a Tesla.
Only dropped for the CT, due to 48-volt issue, according to the tech in Rockville, who seemed to know the problem. We know Tesla hasn’t abandoned Homelink because the new MY has it, although we had to pay $350 for a tech to come out and install the hardware. Pretty complex job involving frunk removal, but the wiring and bolt receivers are there to make it happen. Apparently Tesla determined that use is minimal, so they have removed it for all vehicles going forward, but made provision for installation (it is a third-party 12-volt device) where possible. It’s just not possible with the CT. I signed up for MQ, but am also not extending the contract because of limited phone service. Back to the remote.

I've seen some good comments in here. For me, I like MyQ and have not had any issues. Auto-open/close has been working flawlessly. Sometimes too good as I'll go to move the truck out of the garage and into the driveway to wash it and i just cross the boundary and the door will close before I hit cancel.

I like the idea of adding a mesh network or an AT&T microcell in the garage or where you approach the home. I feel like this is an early implementation of MyQ and they will likely come up with a solution. Someone mentioned Starlink which could be feasible. Since Starlink is having direct-to-cell rolling out, they could transition the MyQ open and close commands to use that band as I imagine it would be a very small piece of data being sent.

Been trying to get MyQ to work for a year. In my Rural area where cell phone coverage is poor at best, it just doesn’t work. Tried changing router on MyQ hub two days ago. Nightmare, since then have spent over 20 hours trying to get it to work. Time spent with MyQ tech support, three hours, resulted in worse problems and resulted in all manual clickers are now non-functional. SOMEONE NEEDS TO “YELL” in Elons ear” MyQ is not a solution, but is a problem. I WANT HOMELINK, it may not be high tech or sexy, BUT IT WORKS!!!!!!
MyQ software used to be free with the purchase of the hardware. I have no idea why it's a subscription when the content and features don't change. In fact, it has gotten worse. It worked better (and quietly!) on my 2019 M3P and it works terribly (and loudly!) with the CyberTruck. It's somewhere in between with the 2026 Y.
