What I personally fear out of the CT (lack of) sales, is that we will have a company that will take less risks with the lineup. They are still taking large risks with autonomy and robotics, but outside of rides when I'm on a business trip (3-4 times a year)... I doubt I'll utilize those much in my life. Where I utilize my CT almost daily. The CT not filling the 125k per year line, will likely lead to any all new model for consumer sales being dulled down and more mass market. IMO the Y, while an excellent vehicle and best value on the road, is still a bland, mass market vehicle. It doesn't excite me, and really they are not designed to. It is a vehicle built to satisfy the vast majority of consumers. The CT was built to be different and a different way of thinking of a truck... it's failure will lead to any future mainstream vehicles being designed to the masses instead of pushing what the vehicles can be.

You're shielded in the Cybertruck. And I have the sunroof cover. The sunvisors in the CT can expand in front, to each side, blocking the light.

The X has a dinky little visor that's near impossible to open, doesn't work on the side, only works (somewhat) on the front. There's no protection from directly above, since the windshield goes from front to way behind the driver.

Got the glass ultra-clean with a DA and Adam's Glass Polish.

Just this cleaning made the BAW much smoother and quieter, even when dry.

I sealed it with "Clean by Pan 8-year" ceramic coating. It's now quite slick and hydrophobic, and I'll get to test it out the next time it rains here... probably about next March.

I'm coating the whole truck, but decided to start with the glass. So. Much. Glass...

I’m just responding to the breathless “copium” on display.

I have always been on team low volume, high value. I love my truck! I don’t give a shit that other people don’t like it. But, I am capable of accepting the fact that other people don’t like it, like REALLY don’t like it. Like- HATE IT!!

Elon thought the Cybertruck was going to be “cool.” The market has spoken. It’s decidedly not “cool.” I know what someone is surely going to rush in to say— BUT “kids” and “90-year-olds” are NOT buying CTs! Hell, practically no one is. That’s the problem.

For some that’s political, for some, that’s aesthetic, for some it’s just plain old luddite objections. Ultimately, the reasons don’t matter. Reality does.

All cars get canceled someday. GM canceled the freaking Camaro! The CT is not making a comeback. It really never arrived. It’s a modern Edsel, just like I said it was going to be, a year ago after public sentiment started becoming clear.

It doesn’t make me happy to say it; it just happens to be true.
I think you’re missing the number one key reason: price.

Yes, Elon is not helping either. Tesla sales have plunged in several markets and not because they suddenly became bad cars. And the Cybertruck is viewed as the most Elon of vehicles.

But I view price as even more key. We are not talking about a small price increase from initial announcement, we are talking a massive one.

And if people think international sales will help, I fear they will be disappointed. Announced prices for the few, limited international markets are even higher than US prices. They are going to be even more of a niche product internationally.

People are willing to overlook some other stuff if the price is right for the function. With the Cybertruck it isn’t for the mass market.

Cannot disagree with you at all. I didn’t mention it because I think it’s so obvious, but yes you’re right.

I guess the only contraindication to that is that Hummer saw an increase in sales and its prices are absurd.

I have no explanation for the GMC Hummer EV, which currently starts at $96,200. Its very existence challenges my understanding of engineering and economics. And yet, not only does it exist -- sales are growing.

TL;DR:

GMC benefits from aesthetic normalcy, brand neutrality, and cultural familiarity/nostalgia. Tesla suffers from brand politicization, aesthetic provocation and totally avoidable social friction. Or what I typically refer to as simply “political headwinds.”

Cost being equal (read as: too damned high), many consumers will avoid controversial options which is exactly what the CT is: CONTROVERSIAL. In every meaning of the word.

A couple of things, some of which, some people won’t like:

1. It’s got a traditional, cool, boxy look. So
 aesthetics. If it were aesthetics alone, I would 100% be driving a Hummer right now. That, despite the fact that I absolutely love the way my CB looks! I like the way the Hummer looks even better.

2. No political headwinds. GMC is a traditional company. They’re not going to ostracize 50% of the buying market through political action, let alone antagonize their core customers who made them a success in the first place.

3. Alignment with tastemakers. Traditional car guys and YouTubers love Hummers. Kids love them too, but as stated above- kids don’t move vehicles. DriveTime, Throttle House, and more traditional car outlets can’t help but love the Hummer brand. These same guys either are full on haters of the CT or disinterested.

Even when the gas ones were in their prime, environmentalists didn’t have much that stuck to say about the vehicle’s looks, other than that it was excessively large and wide. They complained about its impact. The Cybertruck is hated for its looks, and in terms of brand ambassadors, you’re talking Elon, who’s polarizing as hell, versus Schwarzenegger.

Conan wins! Nobody hates the way the Hummer looks. It’s hard to identify an individual associated with GMC at all, let alone someone to hate. They’re not giving you a reason to.

👆 This matters. Honestly, had I known all of the crap we were going to have to deal with, I might not have pulled the trigger. That’s just the truth. I might’ve gone Hummer or just waited for the Scout.

Just a simple example: heading to SoCal tomorrow, and I am concerned about driving my CT—not because of range or anything other than where am I going to park it overnight (in Hollywood) where it’ll be safe from potential vandals? I have never had to consider that with any other vehicle in 40 years of owning my own cars.

I wouldn’t be concerned AT ALL if I were driving a Hummer EV, my Vette, or my FJ (even my other Teslas to a lesser degree). We have a vocal group of cranks here who like to shout everybody down who has anything remotely negative to say about this brand or its founder, no matter how benign or accurate.

I’m not a paid brand ambassador. I bought my car at arm’s length. I own it. I’m not here to carry water for Tesla or Elon. It’ll never happen. I love what I love. I hate what I hate. I say what I mean.

In the last seven days, we’ve had at least three or four major posts about negative consequences of owning a CT—whether it’s vandalization at the airport, being disinvited to an event, or whatever else.

Tesla’s board, fanboys, and sycophants can pretend that these things aren’t real and aren’t depressing sales. But fat meat IS, in fact, GREASY. It always will be.
