The frunk feed can be left on and in my view that’s optimal for Starlink and a fridge and probably a small power station in the frunk.
220w by 48v to a river2 pro, about 60w to Starlink and about 60w to the fridge. Well under the 400w allowance and continuously on even when charging on level 2
Oh, good to know! I erroneously assumed the frunk 48V was the same as the roof 48V feed in terms of auto-shutoff. Now I'm leaning towards bringing the frunk feed back to the rear passenger area!

I haven't received a free mini offer and I have 2 early V2.0 residential subs currently, plus a purchased mini on the $10 per month plan (grandfathered).

I see on r/starlink that the people who've gotten the offer said the hardware is a free "rental" and needs to be returned if the $5 per month sub agreement is ended. So "free" seems not really the case.

They are giving away the mini for free?

Best current discussion I know of this is this thread and video by @Leo Snow .

The solution has been a work in progress for a lot of us. I have been running a battery based solution but when my car comes back from terrestrial armor installation week, I’m planning to do essentially what he did with some minor differences of opinion on connector types and routing but also to power my cabin Starlink.
Here is another thread where some of that evolution is discussed

I’m seriously internally conflicted about my 10gb grandfathered plan. I’m clutching onto it because I wouldn’t otherwise be able to get it back but I’m not sure it’s better for me than the 5gb low speed infinite data thing.

Without knowing anything about it, I'm guessing the "free" Mini offer is only in underutilized geographic areas of service. I guess with the rate SpaceX is deploying new satellites, the entire continent might be "under-utilized", but I doubt it.

The key to any business is maximizing utilization of expensive assets without created more demand than they can handle. This is why EVs are good for electric utilities, they can easily be encouraged to charge at night when there is a surplus of delivery capacity.

Didn’t know the $10 / month plan was gone! I am on it for the past 4 months. So if I upgrade to unlimited for a month, can you go back to the $10 plan or not?

No. I don’t think so but I haven’t tried that.

How slow is slow? Anyone know? I might try it before going unlimited. I have the 50 GB plan and always go over. Of course I let the truck upload all my FSD data so that eats it up quick.

I believe 0.5mbps which is fine for email, txt, basic web browsing, posting here or god forbid Reddit, updating your facebook status to “off-grid” or something. But not really useful for streaming I don’t think.

Thanks for the link to the discussion. It looks like he converts to 12V for the Mini. I want to keep it simple, and I've seen no indication the 48V feed cannot safely power the Mini. It just seems sub-optimal to have the overhead of two power conversions operating on the same device.

Even if I wanted a 12V cooler in the frunk I would likely size the voltage converter for the cooler and run the Mini directly from 48V. But I've been pretty happy with my Cooler Shock ice packs in a soft-cooler for up to three days and I have a solution for longer trips utilizing our super-efficient Oyster hard cooler that will hold 5 large Cooler Shock ice packs (and one or two in the actual working cooler, rotated as needed). The secret for long-lasting super cold is to ensure they are frozen in a freezer of at least 0 degrees F (colder is better). This is not the case with regular ice which just isn't that cold to begin with).

I still need to do the tests, but by packing the Oyster full with five large flat packs and rotating them into the working cooler as needed, I think I can do a week long trip without worrying about power or recharging the cold packs (which are actually a lot colder than ice). I will build a cooler liner from foil bubble insulation for the Oyster Cooler so the cold packs are not in direct contact with the cooler walls and only open it every two days when I need to rotate a fresh cold pack into the working cooler. I might even build an exterior case for the Oyster from the same silver insulation and silver tape. It might go longer than a week!

In terms of total useable refrigerated volume/total volume and weight (vs. electric cooler like the Dometic) I think this will be comparable because most of the Dometic fridges are taken up by insulation and mechanicals. The advantage of the cold-pack based solution is it can't break and it doesn't require electricity (which is a benefit on a multi-day camping trip). And the working cooler is much smaller/lighter to deal with. On a shorter day or weekend trip the advantage is weight/volume/convenience (because there will only be one cooler, and it will be smaller/lighter than the Dometic).

The Oyster cooler is pretty amazing, having used it for a year now. The walls are very thin so it packs a lot for it's exterior volume and weight.

Sorry for the lengthy cooler tangent but I've been considering a Dometic for some time, and I wanted to share my thoughts.

Hmmm. I’ll have to try it out. I don’t have a fancy grandfathered plan so I’ll be the guinea pig.

Fantastic. Would love to hear your experience. Fancy or not, I want to end that by choice if I’m going to.
