PowerShare with Powerwall UPDATE from Wes!

Powershare Gateway (3V) is only needed for Powershare only setups.
If you have a Backup Switch or other version of Gateway, that is all that is needed.

I do not think that is [necessarily] the case, but I also do not know enough of how these things are implemented (e.g., regionally, energy supplier, configuration) to say. I have non-Tesla solar and a backup generator/transfer switch, and these were all in place when Tesla sent an installer to build my Powershare system. That was almost 2 years ago and it still doesn't work. What I mean by that is that it cannot automatically detect a power outage and shift to the truck for power. My transfer switch is downstream of the Gateway.

Thanks for the clear response. You say the Gateway is not necessary and Tesla providers say it is but still doesn’t work. I was just pointing that out.

Gateway 3V is required for Powershare backup
Gateway non-3V or Backup Switch are required for Powerwall backup and eventually PW with Powershare backup

by lame I meant that the installer didn't get yours working. Your setup does need a Gateway 3V and I'd help troubleshoot, if you want.

Question to clarify on the Powerwall update. Does this new software/Powerwall update mean that we'll be able to do at least power to home (and perhaps power to grid where allowed) without the installation of the Tesla Gateway? Will the current Powerwall 3 be sufficient?

Powerwall 3 by itself is not sufficient. Tesla specified my system last summer and it was installed last fall with Gateway 3. By careful - the PowerShare Gateway that is a checkbox with a CT order will NOT work for systems with solar. I ended up dealing directly with Tesla engineering on this and there is no question that the myth out there that Powerwall by itself will allow full integration for grid-connected backup with CT and Powerwall and solar is simply not true. Gateway is required but there are three (or four) Gateways out there and only Gateway 3 will work. How sure am I about this? Tesla voluntarily replaced the Gateway 3V that they sent me upon CT purchase with a standard Gateway 3 because it was their error. They laughed when I asked them about whether there is any truth to the idea that a grid-connected system with all three functions - solar, Powerwall 3 and CT backup could function with only Powerwall and no Gateway. Now the question is whether it ever works. Software is hard. Still holding my breath….

With solar? Tesla told me no when I suggested backup switch to save cost. Non-backup defeats purpose IMO.

Backup Switch works with solar, unless it's not approved in your area.

Yes, but solar won’t be integrated - it will be separate and depending on how you install, you would need an automatic switch to disconnect the panels from the grid during an outage, which you likely already have - the Gateway performs that function for the truck, and does so for solar panels but my understanding is that is true only if they are attached to Powerwall. Tesla did my installation but used non-Tesla panels, so I doubt that’s a factor.

The solar does not need to be attached to a powerwall for this to function.
