I'm working on a project to make a removable system for mounting a machine gun for car shows and to go along with a Halo Warthog theme wrap I am doing. I thought I'd share a few pics of the project in development.
I created some tubes with smaller tubes inside them with metal tabs and notches that lock into place using the rails on either side of the vault. I have 2 versions, the deep version for those holes that are mounting points for the rails and the shallow version for the vast majority of other mounting spots along the rail. While this image shows them mounted near the tailgate, in practice they would be closer to the back window for my purposes, but could be mounted anywhere along the rail.
Then I put together a test platform (shown upside down in the photo merely for testing the concept) that would have a platform capable of sliding left of right along the rails. That platform will support a post that goes up and down and that post will have another platform mounted at the top where the machine guns will reside.
This provides left to right movement and 360 degree swivel, but not using the machine guns at any angle. For that I need a ball joint of some sort and I'm still trying to source a part that will mount to my platform and provide that full range articulation. If anyone knows of good sources for ball joints please contact me asap! I'd like to get this project finished by a car show next month.
Anyway, so far so good, things are coming along...
I did some more work today, and found a ball pivot that I ordered off Amazon to do the final attachment of the weapon mounting plate to the shaft that will run through the sled. Here are some more pics.
I did some more work over the weekend and the mount is now fully functional, not completely finished, but it is functional, moves side to side, can be set at different heights, pivot allows guns to move at any angle through 360 degrees. Here are a few updated pics:
