For Those Waiting for Non-FS Cybertrucks -- Here's the Flip Side to Consider

There's been a broad perception that the Foundation Series gives us a single substantial feature - Full Self-Driving - and a handful of minor things. The balance of the $20K upcharge being a "tax" for being able to get a Cybertruck early.

The flip side of that perception is that when non-FS trucks arrive, they'll simply be like the FS vehicles, lacking only FSD and badging. And with the $7.5K Federal Incentive on top of the $20K reduction in price, the value proposition of that non-FS truck is going to be vastly better.

It's gonna be a little more complicated.

When you peer more closely at all those "minor" things included with the FS, it starts to become clear that that non-FS-truck-that-qualifies-for-the-$7.5K-Federal-Incentive is going to be quite a bit different from the FS trucks. And not having FSD is the least of it, since FSD can always be purchased after-the-fact, or by subscription.

Optional upgrades I think we can reasonably expect on non-FS trucks:

• 20" Cyber Wheels w/35" AT Tires: $4,000
• White Decor: $1,000
• FSD: $7,000 - $8,000 (can be dismissed since it can be bought later)
• Premium Connectivity will Require Subscription ($100 $10/mo)
• Premium Audio: $1,000
• Heated/Cooled Ventilated Front Seats: $1,000

Some of these will probably be combined. But the bottom line is that none of them, save FSD, can be had without bumping the base price of an AWD non-FS model above the $80K threshold for the Federal Incentive. If you want that incentive you'll have to forego any upgrades.

For many, losing the bigger wheels and AT tires is a squinty-eyed moment. Because for a lot of "truck things," they're strongly encouraged.

The premium connectivity is easy to dismiss because, hey, what's a hundred bucks a month? But that alone, over ten years, would be worth $10,000 $1,000.

Subscribe to FSD over that same ten year ownership and it's over ten grand.

That wonderful audio system that everyone talks about? You'll lose some of that.

And after enjoying heated seats on my Model 3, that Heated/Cooled Ventilated Seat option no longer strikes me as an affectation. I'd really hate to not have that.

The bottom line is that the Foundation Series Cybertruck really is a better value than a lot of people have given it credit for. Doesn't mean it's any more approachable. A hundred grand is a whole lot more than most of us have ever spent on a vehicle. But compared to the option-upgrade pricing that's coming on the non-FS vehicles, the FS trucks come off looking pretty good.

Never said they didn’t but if you ordered later (like 2 years after unveiling), all you had the option to do was reserve a truck.. no choice of what amount of motors, FSD, nothing. Those are the people I meant..

Yeah that makes sense. For people in that range, ordering FS now, if they get a chance, is the best choice. I think you are in that range. I hope you get FS invite in couple of months.

Tesla has confirmed that they will honor the FSD price that we locked in when we made the reservation. Many early reservation holders have locked it for $7K to $8K. Here’s the confirmation from Tesla:

Don’t forget all the software based items that can become a upcharge on non-FS trucks

Off-Road mode. Has a big value. Easy to keep turned off.
Four wheel steering - rear wheels currently at 10 degrees for FS - what if not on or some fair amount lower?

Battery - what if smaller or limited by software?

Tonneau - someone mentioned no tonneau. Perhaps not an automatic one, more like a fabric one that is an option on other trucks.

I suppose we shall see, but there are options for Tesla beyond what’s we’ve been discussing

If they expected to subtract all of this stuff, then why didn't they make it a part of the features on the FS?

The specs on the non-FS have been pretty well set. The only real question is what the RWD will come with.

I hope that’s true. I assumed they would make 33” tires standard on the AWD and RWD trims.

I assume the Core Wheels with all season tires will be the base option. But time will tell.

a crew cab Ford F150 is 227.7 inches long. Cybertruck is 224 inches

I hope you get your non-FS and enjoy the crap out of it, especially if none of those things do it for you. Some of those i will gladly take instead of waiting two years (I see FSD increasing by a lot the closer they get to unsupervised so I see a value in it far more than many). Hopefully we both can get our trucks soon and enjoy the heck out of them

I dont see FSD getting more expensive, as adoption growth price will go down. and it already did recently from $200/Month to $99/month. and dont forget about HW! how soon FSD V14.x will not support HW in FS?
now lets talk about FSD value. Current FSD package price is $8000. so comparing to subscription I would have to use FSD every day/month for 80 months just to break even! 80 months is almost 7 years to break even!
so yeah, If I want FSD, subscription makes so much more sense.

and with Elon talking yesterday about option of just sending your tesla to do ridesharing and Teasla taking cut of those earning I would expect FSD to be included (free) option in not so distant future.

The minute it's unsupervised, the price will shoot up. And let me tell you, most people will gladly pay it. You'll be able to sleep, text, or watch a show/movie instead of driving! There are a LOT of people out there that spend at least an hour a day in their cars going to and from their work. Also, think of all the people who can buy a cheaper house further out and let the car drive them...

Throwing in the Powershare equipment on the FS was what did it for me. Mentally it would be harder for me to justify spending over $6,000 to get home battery backup with a Non-FS truck.

When the power goes out, it would drive me nuts knowing that I have 3 days of battery power sitting in the garage and no way to harness it. I know in reality I'm still paying full price, but it won't feel quite as substantial when I cut that check for $3,400 to the electrical installer.

No worries - it helped motivate me to take the plunge on a Foundation Series instead of waiting another year (give or take) for a most likely cheaper truck. Which I'm very glad I did having driven mine for over 1000 miles now
