1000 miles in on my CT (and my first Tesla)

I absolutely love everything about this truck…. EXCEPT…

the “traffic aware” cruise control.

WHY on earth does it just randomly slam on the brakes? Why does it slow down for a yellow flashing light on the side of the road… why OH why is it so bad?

Somebody please tell me it gets better somehow?? I miss my wife's Kia when it comes to cruise control. (Not to mention Lane keep).

looking for some genuine answers here, not some Elon fanboy stuff (no offense). Thanks all!

It's running older software and the object recognition isn't great. FSD 12.5 will bring it up to current functionality.

It's not horrible but agree it's not as consistent and accurate as cars using radar unfortunately. BUT, agree in that the every so often phantom slam on the breaks is very concerning here also, those have to be reduced as can almost kill ya here where its fast and folks follow close behind ya. Had it happen in traffic but also just out of the blue when completely alone and it can be pretty starling,

If you turn off traffic signal control in settings that will prevent the stopping at traffic signals.

Otherwise tacc works fine for me, certainly better than most any others OEM's cruise control. I personally rarely get phantom braking, maybe twice in two months of ownership.

When FSD arrives in a few months, things will improve even more.

This is a band aid until FSD which is awesome. Don’t listen to the Reddit trolls. No one is even close to providing that in a modern car. And I’ve driven most brands and their offerings around self drive.

praying it comes to us soon. Don’t let crappy cruise control upset you, soon we will be cruising autonomously.

Autopilot works well in my area. Only once in a while I press the accelerator to bypass the slowdowns and phantom breaking. it’s overall cautious but that’s better then not and something bad happen.

I have forward collision warning set to super early, yea its annoying but I’d rather it go off too early then slightly too late.

I think maybe my main question is: do other teslas that have FSD have any of these phantom braking problems? Or is that not a thing on FSD. If so I can be patient - but if this persists on true autopilot that would be a major disappointment.

I don't have my CT yet but in my current Model S the autopilot is still the non-AI version which wasn't really designed for vision only, they kind of tacked that on.

They are replacing autopilot (TACC) using the visoin only AI stack with FSD 12.5. If it's anything l ike 12.3.6 it will be a nice upgrade!

I have FSD in my model Y, and it isn't perfect, but what is? Overall, it's mindblowing if you think about what it is actually doing. Sometimes I have to turn it off because I am overly concerned about pissing off other drivers but on the whole, it's a gamechanger.

In my Model 3, early FSD would slow down quickly occasionally. On the upside, I was driving a regular route to/from home and I knew where it would do it, so I'd just goose it through, 'report' the phantom breaking. For the last 12 months of so (up to 12.3.6), honestly, I didn't really have a problem with phantom breaking, slowing for 'yellow overhead lights' and stuff.

I do expect when we get FSD for the CT that initially it may be a bit rough, but the software does improve and it is really quite remarkable.

As many have said, it will get better. Our 2020 X use to piss my wife off so much that she never used cruise at all. After the 2024.3.15 ( FSD (Supervised) v12.3.4 ) it was like a completely different vehicle on FSD and Autosteer. Almost all of the phantom breaking went away. That version did nuke my lifetime trip I had set which I will be sour about forever.

I do agree though, the current Cybertruck ACC is annoying when following someone. I can feel it trying to keep the distance, it is not smooth. Cannot feel that at all in the 2020 X.

I'll be completely blunt........... it sucks balls. Like you said, regardless of settings it will slam on the brakes randomly. If a car turns in front of you 100 yards away, it will slam on the brakes. Going around certain curves, instead of slowing down, slammo!

Hoping FSD will fix most of this (including detection of obstacles when parking and backing up), but think I'll have a better chance of finding unicorn in the wild.
