Most robotaxis are geofenced to only operate in a limited area that they have deeper data for and probably more frequent data updates. And even then they will sometimes just give up and pull over, perhaps causing traffic jams. And there have been a very few injuries or fatalities. Are they worse than human drivers? If all humans were as awesome as some think they are, yes. Compared to the average human driver, they might not be worse. If robotaxis release with even similar or slightly better than the CT in software and capabilities it would be a disaster on day 1.
Neither Tesla nor anyone else is likely to reach level 5 in a week or a year, or level 4 except in a very geofenced context. Maybe in a decade or more. Very maybe in slightly less than a decade.
Right now, regular Tesla FSD is still level 2, although I'd say it's very close to level 3. Whether levels higher than 3 can be achieved with only cameras is controversial; although humans do mostly well enough with just sight (and sometimes hearing)...and allegedly, brains.
Human taxi drivers have caused injuries or fatalities. The late author/priest Andrew Greeley suffered a concussion he never really recovered from (although he lived some years after that, but never wrote or preached again) because the driver was too eager to depart, and his coat was caught. That's the one I know of off the top of my head, but given the gross error involved, I can't help but think that sort of thing may be all too commonplace. Taxi drivers are often tired and usually as focused on making a buck as on safety.
