Anyone else notice you don’t get a battery heating logo nor even preconditioning active when you set it to preconditioning on a schedule. They just need a button for it especially during these colder months coming. Am I doing something wrong?

The battery will heat as it's needed.

Cabin preconditioning does also warm the battery.

In the mobile app, navigate to Climate to customize the temperature at which you want to heat the cabin. This also warms the high voltage Battery as needed.
Additionally, if you set scheduled charging with your expected departure time as the end time, then the pack will be somewhat warmed up.

The pack takes a lot of energy to warm up, so it may not be a net gain to precondition for a commute.

Turned on climate control. Shows battery heating in app.

Currently 43F outside, was below freezing last night.
Turned off a few minutes later. Neither increasing cabin temp nor Max Defrost resulted in battery heating message reappearing. Nor did starting a charge cycle. Nor did sending a route to a local 250kW Supercharger.

Looks like I need to do a bit more research. I've heard you should precondition when possible but if you have an irregular schedule not a problem? But also, precondition prior to charging? How long does that process take and what happens if you don't do it?

The BMS will automatically heat the pack as needed when you are navigating to a Supercharger, as DCFC can maximize the charge rate when the cells are at an ideal temperature (around 50ºC).

For L2 charging, you're nowhere near the max charge rate. The BMS will only heat the battery if it's extremely cold.

NOTE: the term "preconditioning" confusingly refers to both heating the pack for DCFC, and to starting the climate control prior to departure. The former is automatic. The latter is advantageous to range because it is drawn from shore power.

I precondition before most trips with charging to 80%. Usually when I start the trip battery SoC shows anywhere from 75 to 77%. Today I started with 75%, and for decent 50mi into the trip the "regen is limited" icon was lit up! It's not super cold here at the moment, so there is something funky going on with that functionality...
