I did go ahead and look these up and my only concern is that it doesn’t look like they will be wide enough. They all seem to be 2 inches wide and 2 inches won’t get the job done (twss) for the car to recognize it as parking stall markings. It seems like it’s got to be 4 inches or very close to that minimum.

and, 2) you could just use tape to widen it as necessary.

You might be right! Maybe two...double widen it?

Fantastic idea. Has anyone tried this who have a regular garage - ie: the 3" from the wall in order to close the garage? Does it still work?

So, I got to thinking a couple of weeks ago that if auto park is just using the cameras to see lines on the ground, then, I should be able to create “parking stalls” in my garage and have my cars auto park.

Surely, I can’t be the only one to have had the idea. It took a while to reorganize/clean the garage out a bit and get some white gaffer’s tape in before I could rough out a test stall and give it a go. Welp, the tape showed up today.

Even with only one stall roughed out, both my S and the CB recognized two available spaces and both parked in both spots flawlessly. With or without the other spot being occupied.

Game changer!

My wife literally shed a tear knowing that she’s never going to have to struggle backing into the garage to be on her side ever again. Last year she ran into my vet with her model Y in the driveway. She said I’m a genius and I’m not gonna try to convince her that she’s wrong. ?

My cars will be perfectly parked with the exact right amount of space between them and the side walls of our garage from now on!

Why the hell would I buy cars that can’t do this?

Would you mind showing a pic of the front of the truck in relation to the line? How close to the line did it go before stopping?

Problem is that the first time I tried it, the truck saw the parking spot marked out in my garage, but it had a hard time parking I assume because I have a very very small 1/2" tolerance front to back for the garage door to close. So the car really needs to back in perfectly straight. But now Autopark won't recognize the parking spot again, so I guess I'll have to wait for some fine-tuning to happen in a later release.

Me too, gravel. I posted about this same idea last week, getting the parking to work on gravel. We came up with some good ideas, but nothing I was wanting to implement. Wanting to keep the rustic look.

it really should recognize it if your tape is at least 3 to 4 inches wide. That’s an important consideration.

Beyond that, in my second test I made the tolerance is tighter the cyber truck is 6’8” and I made the space only 7 feet wide. This greatly affected the ability for auto park to get directly into the space.

Tolerances DEFINITELY matter. I only have so much space to work with (even in my abnormally large garage) so I’m going to see if 7.2 inches of width is enough for the cyber truck and go up from there if needed.

Ordered Gaffers tape and applied it today 7'-3" inside width and 32' deep. I can't get it to pull in forward but got it to back in twice. I had to clean the camera lenses as it said something like auto-park isn't working now. It didn't hit anything, but it did not stay within the white lines. After reading the thread again, I'm going to lay down another strip of the tape to get wider white lines. Maybe before that I will try my wife's M3 and see how it does with a lot more margin of error with a smaller car. What fun. This is more fun than pulling out little tree stumps with my old F-150. Well, that was fun too, so both are fun things to do with a truck!

Cool! FYI, auto park only works in reverse right now. That’s across all vehicles for Tesla. Forward may be coming in a future update, but it is a reverse only situation presently. Also, the truck is only a little bit less than 224” long, so I would shorten up that depth if you can. You’re trying to approximate a regular parking spot which generally isn’t going to be that deep. I suspect that you’ll get better results if you do. Mine is only 230” (just over 19 feet).

I had to process your request a little bit before I understood what you were asking. So it turns out that my initial rough out was worked better than my second attempt to dial it in. I made the tolerance is too tight and that made things a lot worse.

The cybertruck actually got close enough to the side of the garage opening to fold the passengers side mirror. No damage but just beware it’s not perfect and it will go ahead and run into stuff apparently. Thank goodness it was going forward not backwards. ?

So, here’s the photo that you requested. This was from a test run today. What it shows is that after I made some modifications including widening the strip at the back of the parking spot the truck isn’t pulling back far enough during auto park to close the garage and it’s only missing buy an inch or two almost the exact amount of space that I reduced the interior volume by when I enlarged the thickness of the tape strip. In other words, I made the strip about 5 inches thick instead of 3, and I now seem to be 2 inches too close to the garage door. So, I’m going to need to back that up.

Note: My Cybertruck really doesn’t live in the garage (at least not until I build out four additional spaces), but both of my parking stalls were designed so that it will fit because it’s the worst case scenario in my current fleet.

Well a) the one that I initially shared has been ripped up so I can’t exactly share it it was also cattywampus as a quick rough out. I was just so excited to see if my idea would work at all, I didn’t spend a lot of time other than making sure it wasn’t too narrow to figure it out.

Then I went and tried to refine it and that’s when all hell broke loose (well not really).

So, I’m still testing right now but here is what I believe I know about dimensions internally. And you make a good point anybody doing this shouldn’t measure the volume that you’re creating from the inside edges of the tape boundary.

Here’s what I think I know for the cybertruck (my other Teslas X and S; my mother-in-law has my Y so I can’t test that one) seem to fit and auto park just fine in the space as I currently have it):

I believe that the perfect dimensions would be 8‘ x 20‘. Even though my garage is over spaced I can’t do that and leave sufficient space on the sides and have a center aisle that’s as large as I want it to be so I’m going to try 7’5” wide by 19‘5“ deep or less if I can get away with it. I’ll report back after I finish it.

A word about gaffer tape. Number one remember this is cotton and I’m not sure that it’s going to hold up overtime I’m only using it to test it will get dirty and I’m not sure how well the car will see it after it’s been run over walked over etc. many times.

Someone mentioned above, but it’s worth repeating you can save yourself some time by just buying 4 inch wide gaffer’s tape which is the minimum with recommended by Tesla in the specs that someone was able to find.

OK, my tape is only 2" wide, so I'll try doubling the width and see what happens. Even if it can park 90% of the way and I have to manually finish the last move into the garage that would be a plus.

I can 100% confirm that 2 inches does not work. TWSS. ? I tried that first.

I doubled the width of the 2" Gaffer's tape on the side, and it worked much better. The last photo is the poor parking with single width tape. In the movie, you can see the truck stopped and pulled forward to improve alignment. The inside width is 7' - 3" and the length is 18' - 8". There is another 23" from the end of the tape to the garage door.

My wife's M3 zipped right in with no trouble with the tape only 2" wide. It was fun to do, but not sure I'll use it much. I don't normally back into my garage. Fun afternoon.

Here is the movie. The CT got most of the way in and then pulled half-way out to back in with better alignment.

Very curious myself. Decided to send a pic. I used 4 inch gaffers tape, the truck recognizes the space. Even allows you to select it, but no “start” button appears for me. I have a two car garage and its a tight fit. So much so I have become the driver and pull out the other car for my wife because the tolerances are not much room for mistake. I parked her car. Parked my truck, depending on the angle of apprach, once I was happy with the location, I openee the tailgate to see how square I was to the wall. Once I was happy with both vehicles I went and put the tape around the parked cybertruck. I gave it some breathing room. If anything, they have been great guidelines for me knowing where the truck is positioned in the garage that i can close the garage door and still have my liftgate open. Thanks for paving the way. Any ideas on how to get it to start autopark would be great. Regardless it alows your brain to at least use markers. My approach each time would vary ss much as fifteen degrees.
