I plan to weld up a custom tire carrier that holds it as close as possible to the tonneau so I can still slide 4x8 sheets underneath. It's not like I need to see out the back window.
I am forever following this thread till so I can consider too. The last time I had a flat tire on CT, it was a slow leak so I pumped some air and took it to a tire shop near me. I can call AAA to come out, but without a spare, there is no need to call them.

I ordered a spare tire kit early August. Today, Tesla messaged me to reschedule my appointment for the fourth time stating "parts unavailable" each time. Since August, I have seen the spare tire open for sale and then sell out several times. Why would they open them for sale if they cannot even fill outstanding orders?
I had the same issue several months ago. I just got a refund for them back to my voucher. Ended up ordering cross bars and some other stuff.

Sorry but was pretty painless for me. I used credits and ordered when it came into stock last time. Got the appt to install in ~2 weeks. No mess no fuss.

Buy a used or slightly used Cyber Wheel setup on the marketplace. I will have 4 of them available in about a week for a lot less than Tesla, then buy a cover and some tool kit. More $$ in your bank.

This is what I did after cancelling my order (after being given the run around for 3 months). A LOT cheaper. Since I drive around with the tonneau closed most of the time I don't see the need for a cover.

ordered in June, received in Sept after a few delays. Yes, it takes up a lot of bed space but I always prefer to carry a spare - and air compressor, plug kit, slime, etc.

well worth the peace of mind IMHO

Ordered and paid for the spare kit on Oct 23rd when it was available in the store. First open SC appointment was 12/4. They just messaged that there is a "part delay" and rescheduled to 12/18. Asked if this can be moved to mobile service which they say isn't an option.

The disconnect between available sales on the Tesla store and the SC inventory is odd. This is likely a high sales item based on the level of stock-outs that occur and SC should keep this stocked and allocated to scheduled installs. Perhaps this has more to do with it being easier for the service center to click "parts delay" when they are overbooked. If they shipped the tire kit pre-balance don't understandy why this can't be a DIY install.

Most Tesla SC's have very little room for spare parts inventory, especially complete spare tire kits. I bet they have extra tires if you need one.

I think the tire is mounted and balanced at the service center and then "installed" in the bed. It doesn't take that long once all the parts are on site, but it can take a while for all the parts to get onsite. Was three months for me from order to installation.

I went with a takeoff from Ebay. It was less than $700 delivered in like-new condition, and same type of tire. Will buy another spare before the next camping season - two is one, one is none.

Enjoy the space in your bed while you have it
I’m not planning to haul my spare tire around in the truck, normally. I'll only put the spare kit in the truck when it looks prudent - like a very long road trip.

I mainly bought it (using the PowerShare credit) to extend the life of my original tires by 25% by including the spare in my rotation schedule. That will save me the cost of the tire and its installation over that period - about $600.

A used Cyber Wheel with a TPM from eBay is about $650, shipped. All together the separate items are about $1,200. A complete used wheel/tire assembly can be found on eBay, shipped, for around $800, but the tire is used. These numbers make Tesla's spare wheel cost look fairly reasonable when adding in the value of the jack, tool, and other items. For me that made Tesla's spare tire kit the highest value-for-credit items available.

If you insist on getting a flat tire, doing so when passing a Home Deport is a good plan. A big, mostly empty, well-lighted parking lot and in an area certain to have a good cell phone connection to arrange for a ride home to pick up your spare tire, jack and tools.

Totally. I'm sure everyone who can afford a CT can also afford the Lyft/Uber ride to/from home, a bunch of time and disruption of other plans. More people should think like that, as poor people also need to make money giving others rides and such.

Who can afford what is always relative.

In my case, the relative is who I'd call.
The relative who would give me a ride is my son. ?
The relative who would pick up the tire, bring it to me with tools and help me change it is my daughter. ?‍?
