Rack mounts are abysmal. Are there any billet pieces that attach to create a flat surface with female thread?

I understand the rack interface is not great as far as strength. Who dreamed that up? But there are not many things I want to mount so they are falling off the truck. On a truck with outstanding acceleration? Ahhh no. At a minimum there should be an allowance for a flat crossbar surface without buying a giant cage thing that literally takes hours to assemble and disassemble. I just want crossbars I can swap off and on with a flat surface. At a minimum there should be a stainless sail and tailgate cover that can handle the abuse. I love the truck, but the utility is currently lacking. I’ve been trying to figure out crossbars with 8020 and L track for days. It just doesn’t work. L track isn’t made to do that.

I don’t follow. I have the OEM cross bars and they have been great. I mount them on the roof rather than over truck bed. I took them off and put them back on without issue.

The OEM cross bars include a torque wrench. I don’t understand how they are failing. Maybe I just don’t understand the issue you are having.

User error. Ha. That is a good one. I’m talking about the fact that the rack tower interface surface isn’t flat. Such that the towers, and accompanying cross bars are not at a 90 with the ground. As in, if the towers were of sufficient length to reach the height of the next bars you would be fighting gravity and inertia. Press fit splined studs are not going to survive those forces with weight and acceleration without shared cross bracing. Also the crossbar will be tilted. It requires another entire crossbar and tower fitting in addition to a brace. We are talking great expense and labor to solve a simple design problem with the truck. At present, any real load, like a roof top tent off-road requires an entire cage mount. Said cage takes multiple hours to mount and remove. Rendering it essentially permanent. Not good. I don’t want some huge Erector Set cage on my truck full time.

The mounting surface should be flat. As in, on the same plane as the ground. It should also consist of a bolt welded to the underside of the metal such that the mechanical advantage of the steel is used to benefit the structure. If so, it would be a simple matter to bolt a perpendicular rail onto the mounts such that every existing truck rack could easily be used. Hence, the tent or other material could be below the top of the vault for aerodynamic advantage. You wouldn’t need an entire piecemeal screwed together cap thingy that puts the carried object right into the wind. It is a very simple and obvious detail. As it stands, one is forced to try to figure out a way to mount a rail to the L track. L track is not designed for those torsional loads. If someone could manufacture a piece of aluminum from billet that mounted on to the angle with counter sunk female sleeve connectors such that the billet surface was flat in relation to the ground and it had male threads tapped into it that would be amazing. It would allow mounting a flat rail between the rack points. Any truck rack could mount to the rail. It would be matter of few minutes to remove it. It would be around $300.00 instead of $3000.00. And it would do a better job. Rant over. Thank you and come again.

Beyond that, there are multiple third-party solutions; I’m not sure why any of them would take … what did you say days to install?

This is the most open and notorious “design flaw” in the history of “design flaws.” I’m definitely not trying to lecture you I’m only trying to confirm that you looked at this thing before you bought it because … I mean … ? ? ?

If this was so important to you, and you understood all the engineering of the angles, and the vectors and the billet and the this and that … why the hell would you buy it without first insuring that an OEM or third-party solution existed to solve this mission-critical “design flaw?”

Exactly and somebody’s working on a variable height crossbar system that can be raised and lowered (I don’t remember who). Almost every solution out there has been discussed on this forum.

There’ve been zero suggestions that any of them are particularly onerous to put on and take off. Nor one has discussed the idea that you’re going to sheer off the connection points either just driving. And why anyone would be launching with a roof rack or other 200lb + load mounted on the roof, I can’t imagine.

But maybe Whistling Diesel, Jr. here can elucidate. ?
