When Musk and Leno drove the CT, Leno commented about the glass roof and Musk reminded him it was all about a Bad Ass CyberTruck. The Cybertruck debut featured the glass and this forum has shared the patents and tech specs on the glass, all of that to say, Tesla is trying to make this truck to be extremely durable regarding glass.
Regardless of the durability, I find an glass roof to be distracting while driving. I always drive with the shade closed under a sunroof as changing sunlight between the trees can create an undesired strobe effect. I might enjoy a glass roof if this were an R.V. driven seldom for a weekend outing but as my daily truck, I would prefer a solid roof. More specific to this vehicle, I would prefer a solid roof covered with photo voltaic cells and let the glass roof be an option for those that purchase the camp kitchen and plan to off road in their BACT. PV covering the SS might help with surface temperatures as discussed elsewhere in this forum.
Give me a thumbs up if you agree, you would prefer a solid roof.
Give me a thumbs down if you disagree with me; you prefer the glass roof as the truck is designed.
When the truck was unveiled, we heard of reservations for law enforcement and military applications. As a law enforcement vehicle, I’m curious if the flashing lights on the roof would reflect inside the vehicle and be a distraction during a high speed driving situation. For a military vehicle, a glass roof might have advantages, but more often I would think the customer would order it with a metal roof, all things considered.
Much of the catalyst for my opinion comes from the fact the sunroof exploded on my car last week. When I googled it “_________ sunroof explodes” (fill in the blank with your car brand) you will find it is not uncommon, though most people have never heard of it. Sunroof aftermarketeers claim to be repairing them at almost one a day. The tech data suggests the glass is manufactured one millimeter thinner than it use to be and the savings are enjoyed by all car companies. After I checked a few websites, watched some you tube videos, then I filled in the blank with “Tesla”.
It just seems to me, a glass top is a distraction I’d rather not have in my next truck. Give me a thumbs down if you disagree and want a glass topper; give me a thumbs up if you agree a solid roof is preferred for your next truck.
Don't take away my sunroof. Just get a shade that can be pulled for your comfort. I might even use a shade at times. But, a glass roof is bad ass. peace

Some people love to peel off damaged plastic. Like popping bubble wrap or something.

One of my friends in grade school always wore hose. Her favorite thing was when it got a run, she'd tear them off in little pieces.

Think of that, but shiny plastic for the truck.

Drive an ev to save the environment. Wrap it in plastic to continually peel it off to not save the planet. ;). I'm going to say it again despite realizing I'm in the minority here. Wrapping is an atrocious, tacky fad i can't wait to go away. FB videos of wrappers be damned!

Wraps cost a lot more than hose. If I could wrap my truck for $300 and get a new one every year I might do that, but I think it's more along the lines of $3,000+ which is a no-go.

Sure would be nice to have some solar charging using the glass roof and windows with the new tinted solar glass tech! (Tinted of course with UV guard) Elon buy out clearviewpv.com

Off topic, I am also very likely going to do a high performance film in the truck bed to protect the stainless.
I think it was Jerry Seinfeld that pondered the utility of helmets on skydivers. "If the chute doesn't open, then the helmet is wearing you for protection"

Even hardened stainless will have abrasion and patina.
Ya'll are too accustomed to having painted vehicles, which are delicate little snowflakes.

I invite you to examine your oft-abused kitchen sink. Does it have any dents, or deep scratches that need grinding out? Can you feel any defects? Take a fork and try to make a deep scratch, if you can. (Use a fork you're not particularly fond of.)

Yeah sure, the CT will get little scratches and abrasions over time, and it will be GLORIOUS

Personally, I think damaged wrap looks pretty shoddy, "plasticy" and cheap, not like a scratch in real metal - that just adds to the tough look of the truck. And wrap doesn't offer any real protection against dents and dings. The cold-rolled stainless will take much more abuse than current truck bodies without getting dented. It'll be the first truck ever that is actually pretty "tough". "Ford tough" is not very tough. I know, I have one. The mild steel bed looks like it's been through hell and back. All dented and with scratched paint and the rust starting to show through. It only has 45K miles. The paint has micro-scratches from branches that would look good in stainless but looks like crap in the clear coat. I don't think regular saplings and tree branches will even scratch the cold-rolled stainless, at least nothing that a regular ScotchBrite pad won't buff out if so inclined.
Just gonna drop my profile image render here..... so shmexy....

Carbon capture writ small.

My kitchen sink is some sort of fiber composite and is so full of scratches...

...And my friends' stainless sink has dents from where the broiler grill was dropped on it and a matte patina from all their obsessive use of comet.

Kitchen sinks are not made from ultra-hard cold-rolled 300 series stainless steel (nor are they 3 mm thick)!

Anything can be damaged or scratched but it's not going to be a cheap marketing phrase like Ford uses when people say their truck is "Cybertruck tough".

Gravel will be harder and sharper than the hardness of the Cybertruck. The world is filled with bits of rust, solvents, and oxidizers.

If someone wants to put an ablative surface on, it's no skin off my nose.

I like visual aids, so... as we can see here:
1626370240657.png

It is capable of making a pretty sharp turn. Instead of rolling up under the back seat like that, maybe it could take this path:
1626370345159.png

That wouldn't need to take up a lot of room in the passenger compartment.
It would make the roof of the truck a bit thicker, and would eliminate the glass roof (at least when the bed is open)
The rolling tonneau cover is designed for a full-grown man to be able to walk on it without damaging it. This will be very handy but I don't know of any technology that could allow itself to fold back onto itself as depicted and still be able to be walked upon.

Also, the reason Tesla uses glass roofs is because that inch and a half it saves reduces frontal area by and inch and a half times the width of the cabin. In other words, it reduces the drag by a truly substantial amount while maintaining comfortable headroom and a nice ambiance in the cabin. This produces substantial value in the truck by requiring a smaller, less expensive battery for a given range and cabin size. Having the tonneau cover locate as suggested ends up being very expensive (if it were even feasible for it to fold so sharply and maintain it's physical strength and security) due to requiring a larger battery to compensate for the higher roofline. Keeping the roofline as-is would reduce space in the rear of the cabin to an unacceptable degree.

Helmet is protection when the chute opens during touchdown. If chute does not open, helmet is a port-a-potty

Nor off mine. But I know people don't always think clearly and sometimes appreciate being shown the error of their ways before they waste a bunch of money on something they might later regret.

If I can save one person from looking like a dweeb, the few minutes it took me to discuss the irrationality of it all will have been well spent. ;)

Besides, plastic films are made from petroleum. I can only see furthering petroleum products if it's important enough. This just seems like a silly waste.

When I was taking engineering courses for the first time (thirty years ago) I realized that glass was shaping up to be cheaper than the stamped steel of the cabin. I was thinking you could make a bubble of just a few big pieces and hide the safety cell inside and it would be beautiful and cheaper.

And now, thirty years after I doodled this crossover with a glass roof I'm going to get to buy one.

So yeah, I want the glass roof. My fav thing is looking up and around while I ride through the redwoods on the way to the beach. Or the store.

What better use of FSD.
