dual motor will get hummer ev style crab mode. quad motor will have both hummer ev style crab mode and rivian r1t style tank turn. Meanwhile F150 lightning just drives straight.
There is a reason F150 is the best selling truck. They make trucks for what people really do. Driving straight is what we do in U.S. off road is fiction most of us see only on the screen.

Frankly the only thing that may push me over $50K for CT is 400+ mile range. The only additional features I care about is full pass through and spare. Can live without additional motors or the rear wheel that has mind of it’s own.

So many negative assumptions being made here. I will wait and see before complaining about great new features being available.
You are missing out on a lot of pessimism. That is what brings us together. Who in the right mind likes to see other people happy.

I'm thinking they can't make enough batteries to build the truck yet, so why not mess with the design until they can. The new design doesn't actually delay deliveries at this point because of the battery shortage.
It keeps people talking and Tesla at the front of people's minds with very little actual cost compared to a huge marketing budget.
I think you have a point. I also think 4 motors are especially attractive to Tesla because they realized how much control they can have over the character of the truck with OTA updates as they learn and get feedback. Your CT could be safer and more capable years after your purchase.

From my reservation number, I'm guessing I won't get one until late 2025 at the earliest. But I'm definitely up for the 4 motor - or who knows by that time? - the six motor tracked version with a pressurized cabin suitable for ops on Mars, lol....

The CT4 option may also be an intentional offering to reduce the total number of high trim orders into a more reasonable amount that can be delivered at the start. Being Tesla likes to release the flagship option of its vehicles first. IDK but its a thought. 42% of folks opting in for the top model as we understand it is way more than Tesla had anticipated.

You are right. It's all bonus features. The main feature driving my decision was range. My wallet would prefer the cheapest model, but I wanted at least 300 mile range. So I chose the dual as is my upper limit price for the desired range. I'm hoping the production range will exceed that. It would be amazing if I can get my dual motor for 500mi or anywhere between 300-500. Quad motor is a fantasy for me. Any fancy pants wheel turning is also not necessary or driving my decision, but if I need to upgrade to get it and it's within affordable reach, I will opt to get it, not for any fantasy off road reasons, but for more practical parking and maneuvering in NYC where I live and drive! It has very practical benefits in real world situations. Just because it's never really been a thing before in a normal vehicle doesn't mean it's not useful or beneficial to every day driving.

The price will jump to? $100k?
now he is pricing people out of the truck....for those of us with CT3 reservations, we are now going to be pushed out another year or so.....what a fuc*ing way to run a railroad....take money on a design, then drop one line add another, add cost and add wait time.....don't know about you guys, but I am starting to get depressed and discouraged real fast...this event, if true, may just "drive" me away

Fiction? I'm literally only buying the CT because I want an off-road capable BEV.

Nearly 70 percent of truck owners go off-road one time a year or less. And a full 35 percent of truck owners use their truck for hauling—putting something in the bed, its ostensible raison d’être—once a year or less.

Sorry but Musk is starting to skate on thin ice....

I put a good faith deposit on the tri-motor, already going way above my budget just to try to get the truck somewhat soon. Now my selection of trimotor is at the end of the line according to this thread, and I might even have to pony up another lump of cash just to get the vehicle before I turn old and gray.... WTH Tesla.

First, with the trimotor push to the back of the line or forced into a quad purchase, "bait and switch", and now with the risk of price adjustments, more "bait and switch". I understand there are reasons for all of this, but this is turning into a fiasco.

Sell me the truck I reserved, in the original delivery order promised, at the price I reserved it, and get out of my way. Tesla's not a startup anymore, so they can't hide behind this methodology like in years past.

All the "CT4 must be $100k or more" talk on here seems to forget that a quad-motor EV truck has already started deliveries and starts at $69k...

I agree we have no idea what the price will be and inflation will have an effect on the states prices but, (1) as a % of a $70k+ vehicle, another motor is a very small increase and (2) Tesla's economies of scale, and battery costs, are FAR better than Rivian.

  • Single Motor RWD with 250+ miles $39,900
  • Dual Motor AWD with 300+ miles $49,900
  • Tri Motor AWD with 500+ miles $69,900
  • Quad Motor AWD with 500+!!! miles $99,900
So it was jumps of +10k -> +20K - tri2quad> +25/35k

It's starting to loose the idea of a car for every pocket and a car for just some!!
This is my case! An EV with internal space for 5 adults, good range, high tech, with good price. Yes, I don't need a truck, but it started to be the best choice for my needs.
I have a reserve for a dual.

Seriously. Adding one motor will raise the price by over 40%? I doubt it.

And, let's not forget the real battle. The CT isn't in competition exclusively with other EVs. Its intent is to be the best selling pickup, PERIOD.

It needs to be persuasive to the dug-in EV naysayers in the FF pickup market. They need to seriously spec and price the CT to the point where there's no discussion.

Not for nothing, but if the bait and switch ends up being that you keep your reservation position, all existing CT3 preorders get a 4th motor for free and with the upgraded batteries we get some extra range, then I'm all for the switch. I bit on the bait and what I get reeled into is an even better proposition than I thought.

But with your negative nelly attitude, maybe you'll just downgrade to a CT2 and get it at the original CT1 price. Who knows.

The $69,990 Tri Motor just turned into a guesstimated $84,990 Quad Motor.

Elon wants the Cybertruck to THE BEST pickup truck on the market. Tesla will have to scale up electric motor production!!!
well, if that the game he wants to play, he will lose me and my future business......

Don't be too surprised if the roadmap announcement gives us the following:

  • Single Motor RWD Dual Motor AWD with 250+ miles $39,900
  • Dual Motor AWD with 300+ 500+ miles $49,900
  • Tri Motor Quad Motor AWD with 500+ 600+ miles $69,900
  • Quad Motor AWD with 600+ miles and Baja 1000 ready $89,900
But then, I have more of an optimistic view of things and I trust that Elon is ready to kick some serious ass.

So now we know how they are going to get around not honoring the preorders. By producing the 4 motor version for a couple years until people get tired of waiting for cheaper versions. My bet is it will land somewhere around $90k. There are definitely enough people out there with money to spend to keep production of this version busy for a couple years. I really think this is the strategy. Make a version that no one has been able to order so that you don't have to honor the orders. Seems to line up with a lot of the nonsense that has come out of Tesla in the last couple years. But I guess when you have almost unlimited demand you can get away with it.

It seems like Tesla has deviated from the original mission of getting people into the best affordable EVs to get the world more green and now its make the most record breaking, mold breaking, bad ass cars in the world because they have the demand for it. Honestly, its making me lose respect for them. I have been saving and I could probably stretch to afford a $90k truck if I really wanted to, but I am not that truck guy that needs a showy, sub 3 sec., crab walking, truck. I am happy with a great $50k EV truck that gets the job done.

I could be wrong and maybe they will produce more reasonable versions in a reasonable time frame. I know Elon has said that this is one of his favorite projects and he wants to make it the best truck out there and there is some serious competition now. I guess we will just have to wait until the earning call to learn more.
