We are all very upset about the reported low range for the CT. The 4680 battery, like most tech in the CT is new and changing and that is the key to range improvement. But unfortunately the battery packs are one thing that cannot easily/cost effectively be changed in an existing CT.

The above, as most battery updates, focus on the cathode but as I have mentioned elsewhere on this forum the anode (graphite) is also changing with the addition of microcrystalline silica (Panasonic/Sila companies are building plants in WA state now). This will also improve 4680 energy density and efficiency.

As a CyberBeast future owner I am hopeful that the 4680 batter improvement happens very fast (like before the CyberBeast production in the second half of the year). But even if it doesn't I am still moving forward with my order. I believe that a significant battery improvement could still be available to early adopters via the battery extender, which can be added later.

This reminds me of the "Plaid +" model s. Both the range extender and the chemistry improvement. I think it's equally likely that they cancel the range extender and upon better energy density, just use less cells per pack to crank out more trucks.

Not trying to be a doomer, but "we took passenger lumbar support out because logs showed so few people used it", and "we cancelled plaid+ because plaid was just so good"... I think it's at least worth mentioning that people should temper their expectations about both things until they actually materialize, especially for those using this as their reason for waiting until after FS orders are done.

But also, don't listen to me, everyone cancel/wait so I get mine sooner, haha.

Really hoping that by the time the truck gets to Europe that there will be an upgrade in range. See a lot of people online saying that there are likely to be incremental improvements the question is will tesla implement them right away or wait so as not to anger the people who were early adopters and got a cybertruck with less range.

Of course there will be higher range in Europe, they use kilometers, duh

Likely we will hear an update on the 6840 ramp on today's Tesla investor presentation and perhaps even a chemistry/anode/cathode update.

I just placed my order on Jan 18th so I'm hoping that this transition will be made before I get my delivery. If not I'm going to request that my delivery get pushed back. I really hope the FS wasn't meant just to use up all of the old battery chemicals before transitioning to the new formula. That would really suck.

This is not something you'll likely be privy to. There's nobody you can call who will confirm for you if they are already using gen 3 cells, or when they would start, or anything like that. There's also nobody who can tell you if they will reduce the number of cells per pack if/when the energy density improves, or if they will just pass along the range improvement to customers.

Even if they address the gen 3 cells beyond the rumor that they are now in the Q/A, they will likely not give you enough details to make your decision. You're going to end up having to make the choice with no more information than you have now.

You put in your order or reservation?
If you put your order in and are scheduled for delivery in the next few weeks would assume it will be the current battery tech that others are getting.

Let me blow your mind with this - the window sticker will reveal the range and if the range is the same as all of the previous cybertrucks it isn't using the updated cells. You don't think Tesla will be the first one to pound it's chest and publish the increased range? I do not agree with your assessment at all.

Anyway I'll be picking my CT up with a check and if I don't like anything about it as far as fit, finish, or range goes I will be asking for a later delivery.

unless, and hear me out... they use 10-20% less cells, so they can build 10-20% more trucks.

I thought the same way Coltpete (edit: about passing on pick up with a check if my build just missed the 4680 chemistry upgrade) but then realized what would an extra 16-34 miles really mean to me? If I really need an extra 100 miles or so I could take advantage of the bed battery end of year and perhaps benefit from any 4680 upgrades by then. If it is a big enough deal perhaps Tesla would give Foundation owners a discount????

Another reason I plan to not go the Foundation route (if offered) and wait to get a non-foundation AWD. My hope is that the Cybertruck will have the NMC 955 material in use by then.

Any range improvements to the existing CT is greatly appreciated.

But removing cells will drop the voltage. So they must rebalance the arrangement, which changes the physical layout, and the charge/discharge profile, etc. And since it's a structural pack, they must account for the missing strength.

It's easier to just reprint the window sticker lol
