AI5 Ready to Roll! Elon says we don’t need it!

Tesla has finalized its chip design for AI5, as Elon Musk confirmed today that the new chip has reached the tape-out stage, the final step before mass production.

But in a brief reply on X, Musk clarified Tesla’s AI hardware roadmap, essentially confirming that the new chip will not be utilized for being “enough to achieve much better than human safety for FSD.”

He said that AI4 [HW4] is enough to do that.

Instead, the AI5 chip will be focused on Tesla’s big-time projects for the future: Optimus and supercomputer clusters.

On most good days, I think that HW4 is already a better driver than I am (and I’ve never had an “at fault” accident since in my first year of driving where I very gently bumped into the car that I was behind [no damage to either] at a stoplight in 1987 because my POS 1968 Dodge Coronet’s brakes were so bad that they couldn’t hold back idle creep)!

This is just Elon being Elon. Remember FSD didn't need HW4, either HW3 would be 10x a human...but now it does. He says things to prevent Osborning.

His recent post said the current model is improving at a rate that has kept it ahead of the 10x model. Has a fit into HW4 issue been mentioned that I missed?

Yes. 10x was supposed to be in 14.0. Ashok said they have been doing work on new ways to compile it. HW4 just doesn't have the space for it (currently)

Also, Elon says things. The 10x parameter is obviously the goal otherwise they wouldn't keep striving for it.

14.3 was supposed to be the big update. It was what Elon said V14 would be from the beginning. Now 14.3 is a minor update and 15 is the one.

Ditto, what you're saying. 60 years of driving (including several years of large trucks in downtown Minneapolis) and so far no accidents. Knock on my wooden head (twice). That said, FSD v14.2.x is a better driver than I am and also better than anyone I know (mostly way, way better).

As I understand it: RoboTaxis and CyberCabs are AI4. Obviously AI4 will do Unsupervised FSD and are already superior to a human driver. AI5 will add other capabilities like faster distributed computing. Cars won't be prioritized for AI5 as they really don't need it. Optimus and data centers will be prioritized, then cars (mostly for expanded distributed computing when idle).

Bill Gates said we'd never need more than 128 mb of memory in a computer. You add more Memory/CPU/GPU/Storage in a computer, developers(I'm guilty) will use it, and it'll will become the new minimum requirement. They've got Doom running on a pregnancy test.
