Floor mounted accelerator...that goes back a few decades...and there's a reason they stopped doing that. Probably the same reason the dimmer switch isn't on the floor anymore.

I find it an odd choice, I'm curious about the rationale

Dimmer isn't on the floor because it's cheaper to install one multifunction stalk than a bunch of separate buttons in diffuser locations in the car.
