How do you order a platter in advance without having a VIN, etc. to link the two?

As usual, government and it's laws are murky. It is clear there is available a retention fee that can be paid to keep personalized plates that are not assigned to a vehicle.

But on further research it appears that may only available at renewal time (CVC 5016(c)).

It may be necessary to assign them to one of my cars initially.

I have to go in to the DMV 10-12 weeks after ordering to actually get the plates, so I'll find out then. But I'll be prepared to assign to one of my cars, just in case.

In Québec you can buy it, get it and register it wthing 4 years. I do not know about the rest of Canada.

Ordered almost immediately after reveal. Someone beat me to the version with the "K" (well played sir, whoever you are....). Now I just need my Tri-motor, or Elon can loan me the prototype for a while....

I ordered mine. Got a call from the county tag office approving my plate. Already sent me my paper tag as my old tag is void. Should have my new plate the first of the year... MARZRVR

Yes. My new plate is registered to my current vehicle and will transfer when the CT is delivered.
