The handwriting is on the wall!
Ford/GM/Toyota/VW: Dead in the water.
Now we are seeing a panic of the old world corporate business model.
New products from Tesla will be 50% cheaper and produced 50% faster.

I just hope some of the cute competitors survive, like Citroen Ami EV and the Ora Funky Cat.

You donā€™t want to be associated with SpaceX?

Iā€™m a massive fan of Musk. Doesnā€™t mean I agree with everything he says. But the man has done more to move humanity forward than anyone else in a long long time.

You can be a fan of a person without agreeing with their political views. Itā€™s allowed.
I'm no longer a fan of his. The reasons are political and not a topic for here.

If you're a fan, you're elevating them and their actions. Good and bad.

I don't need to be a fan to appreciate things he's done. The world isn't black and white.

......

That would be bad. We need them to transition the world to renewables.

Ford and VW look like they are now making serious attempts.

Toyota & GM not so much.

Iā€™d love nothing more than for the CT to fall flat and only be a 40-70k unit/year car.
If the opposite is true and the market is flooded with them, they will become True Religion jeans

I was under the impression that you had to. Now, Im confused - what was the 7k option for then?
if you want FSD yes you have to buy it. it comes standard with Autopilot, which is different and included in the purchase price.

A lot of people believe we cannot transition to a sustainable energy economy without legacy auto but that is misguided thinking and it elevates the importance of a handful of out-dated companies far beyond their actual standing. One thing I've learned through my life is that the more difficult the job, the more important it is to not try to adapt totally inadequate tools to the task at hand. Better to just replace the old tools with new tools that are more suitable for the task at hand. And legacy auto is entirely unsuited to the task at hand.

In many ways they are actively holding back the transition by creating less than optimum user experiences and refusing to build useable charging networks for those who don't want to have an ICE powered road-trip car for distant travel. It's not in legacy auto's best financial interests to transition to EV's rapidly. In 2020 GM claimed they would have 30 new EV models available by 2025 and most people believed them, because they were GM. Now they claim they will have "over a dozen" new EV models by 2025. Worse, they build their EV models in extremely limited quantities while selling millions of new ICE vehicles. The reality is GM will not have any 2025 high volume EV models.

GM wants you and me to believe they are helping speed the transition, but you would have to be a sucker to believe that. Their first new EV in years, the Hummer, was actually designed to use as many scarce batttery materials as possible while not significantly displacing new ICE sales in any number.

When the going gets tough, the inept should get out of the way and let the real leaders do what they do best. In GM's case, they don't have a choice, because they are literally incapable of sustaining their financial health while selling EV's in high volume and you are deluding yourself if you think they can change quickly enough to survive.

Then you are going to be very unhappy when Tesla ramps Cybertruck to high volume by next year. People who think they will not ramp CT to high volumes are ignoring all the evidence in favor of their own world view that ignores reality.

I nominate you for the most confused person on this forum. First you say you don't want to be forced to pay $15K for something you don't want, then you reference an OPTION that only costs $7K.

Hint: "option" means it's optional. Just like not every Ford Lighting purchaser pays over $97K (but good luck trying to buy an entry level Lightning for the new bare-bones price of $55,974).

Thanks Mikey! I agree I am confused - but I thought this is the place to ask all the dumb questions as a community trying to help each other out.

So I nominate you as a know it all ... :) We can call it even and be friends again!

The problem was, you were not asking a question, you were acting as if it were a fact that you would be forced to pay $15K for something you didn't want. It's non-sensical to believe that when I haven't seen anyone claim that's how it works. It looks like you made it up out of thin air.

I have no problem with sincere questions from the less informed.

FSD is always optional, if you can live with the FOMO.

If you ordered FSD with your reservation, then it locked the price ($7k on launch day). Today it costs $15k.

Regardless, Tesla now has a FSD monthly plan, so you can rent it.
