Hey guys

Wanted to share this project with someone that may be wanting to find another way to mount their MTB/EMTB that does NOT interfere with rear camera, hence mess up FSD.

It was easy enough to throw the bikes over the tailgate, but that was always causing issues with the FSD. It was usually fine for one bike, but if you are taking more than one it became a headache.

Things I was looking to achieve:

  • Mount multiple MTB/EMTBs
  • Does not interfere with rear camera/FSD still functional
  • Does not take up a ton of bed space, so when not carrying bikes I can use that space freely
  • Did not have to remove front wheel to mount.

Many people always recommended Ride88 or similar, but the issue with this was that it takes up a ton of space in your bed, and you also have to keep tailgate open when driving (disables rear camera). There were also some people that were using the Cybertruck Cargo divider and removed front wheel of their bike to secure to bed, but this is a huge PITA to do.

Solution:
The solution was a combination of parts that got me the results I was looking for. Took these on several road trips and they held up very well. I only used 3 bikes on mine, but you can definitely fit up to 4. I am sure there is some impact on range keeping bikes this way, but the tradeoff was worth it for me.

Crossbar has a 110 LB capacity, but you are not really putting that much weight on them since the bikes are sitting in the bed. I am using the D hooks on the floor to secure the bikes with Voile straps (in addition to on front wheel as well).

What's the range hit from that? I'd estimate 20% higher energy consumption from the open tonneau and the wheels sticking up... Maybe less? Depends on the wind, too, bikes up top catch more crosswind.

Not sure, I am certain there is impact for sure...but hasn't been anything crazy for me to take notice on the day trips for biking that I take

Any reason you just didn’t do a second bar and have the cover closed?

I am not a fan of having a cross bar over the trunk bed (if I needed to transport something large)

And I wanted to get a lightbar in the front eventually (would be hard to get bikes that far up too)

Don't go up that driveway with the bikes on.
Seems like a rack in the hitch could be built so as not to obscure the rear camera.

Thanks for the post, however that’s not a clean method for me. I assume you have tried a hitch rack?

Interesting solution. I have a hitch rack and FSD doesn’t work properly with it and/or bikes on it. I figure Tesla will eventually fix FSD to work despite partial blockage of the rear camera. Surprised they didn’t do this already as the Y also has hitch support. But with CT towing is a not so trivial use case. They need to solve/support it eventually. Until such time though this is neat.

The Boundry website states that the system is not compatible with Cybertruck and actually goes as far as saying that CT is not a truck). How do you secure the rear wheel of the bikes without the entire system? I think I’ll keep using the tailgate cover.

Good reason to not buy their stuff, I suppose.
